अगर आप रणथंभौर किले की यात्रा करने का प्लान बना रहे हैं तो आपको बता दें कि यहां की यात्रा करने का सबसे अच्छा समय नवंबर और फरवरी के बीच है, क्योंकि इस दौरान राजस्थान में सर्दियों का मौसम होता है। किले में घूमने का सबसे अच्छा समय दिन में सुबह के समय और शाम के समय रहता है क्योंकि इस समय यहां तापमान काफी कम होता है। राजस्थान के सवाईमाधोपुर ज़िले में स्थित प्राचीन ऐतिहासिक एवं सामरिक महत्त्व के दुर्गों में अपना विशेष स्थान रखता है। यह अत्यंत विशाल पहाड़ी दुर्ग है। अपनी प्राकृतिक बनावट के कारण यह काफ़ी प्रसिद्ध है। यद्यपि यह दुर्ग ऊँची पहाड़ियों के पठार पर बना हुआ है, परंतु प्रकृति ने इसे अपने अंक में इस तरह भर लिया है कि मुख्य द्वार पर पहुँचकर ही इस दुर्ग के दर्शन किये जा सकते हैं। इस दुर्ग के प्राचीर से काफ़ी दूर तक शत्रु पर निगाह रखी जा सकती थी। यह क़िला चारों ओर सघन वनों से आच्छादित चम्बल की घाटी पर नियंत्रण रखता था।
बता दें कि इस किले का निर्माण कब हुआ उसका सटीक समय आज भी अज्ञात है। हालांकि कई पुरातत्वविदों का कहना है कि किले का निर्माण 10 वीं शताब्दी में चौहान वंश के राजपूत राजा सपल्क्ष्क्ष शासनकाल के समय शुरू हुआ था। राजस्थान के चौहान शाही परिवार ने किले का शेष निर्माण पूरा किया था। जब चौहानों ने किले का प्रबंध किया तब इस किले को रणस्तंभ के नाम से जाना जाता था। पृथ्वीराज चौहान प्रथम के शासनकाल के समय यह किला जैन धर्म से प्रमुख रूप से जुड़ा था। 1192 ईस्वी में इस किले पर मुस्लिम शासक मुहम्मद ने कब्जा कर लिया और पृथ्वीराज चौहान तृतीय हरा दिया। इसके बाद 1226 ईस्वी में किले पर दिल्ली शासक इल्तुतमिश ने कब्जा कर लिया था। हालांकि चौहानों ने 1236 में फिर से किले पर कब्जा कर लिया। 1259 में बलबन ने कई असफल प्रयासों के बाद जैतसिंह चौहान से किले पर कब्जा कर लिया। फिर 1283 में जैतसिंह चौहान के उत्तराधिकारी शक्ति देव ने किले को जीत लिया और इसके बाद राज्य का विस्तार भी हुआ। 1301 में किले को अलाउद्दीन खिलजी ने कब्जा कर लिया था।
इस किले के बड़े गेट, स्तंभ और गुंबदों, महल और मंदिरों के साथ इसकी राजस्थानी वास्तुकला यहां आने पर्यटकों को अपनी तरफ आकर्षित करती है। यहां पार्क का रिजर्व क्षेत्र कई तरह के जानवरों और पक्षियों का घर है। किले के पास पर्यटकों को आम तौर पर बहुत सारे बंदर देखने को मिलते हैं। अगर आप भाग्यशाली हैं तो यहां आपको राष्ट्रीय उद्यान में रहने वाले मौर भी दिखाई दे सकते हैं।
रणथंभौर का किला, रणथंभौर नेशनल पार्क के बीच एक बड़ी सी चट्टान पर स्थित है। इस किले में एक बहुत विशाल सुरक्षा दीवार और सात द्वार हैं जिनके नाम नवलखा पोल, हाथी पोल, गणेश पोल, अंधेरी पोल, दिल्ली पोल, सतपोल और सूरज पोल हैं। किले में एक कचहरी भी स्थित है जिसको हम्मीर कचहरी कहते हैं, इस कचहरी में तीन कक्ष है जिसमें केंद्रीय कक्ष सबसे बड़ा है। बरामदे की छत को सपोर्ट देने के लिए संरचना में खम्बें है। इस किले के अंदर हम्मीर सिंह के शासनकाल के दौरान बना एक महल भी स्थित है जिसको हम्मीर पैलेस कहा जाता है। इस महल में कक्ष और बालकनी है जो छोटे पारंपरिक दरवाजों और सीढ़ी से जुड़े हुए हैं। इस तीन मंजिला इमारत में 32 खंभे हैं जो छत्रियों या गुंबदों को सपोर्ट देते हैं। इस किले की संरचना में एक बरामदा है जो भवन के प्रत्येक स्तर तक लेकर जाता है।
रणथंभौर का किले में एक 84 स्तंभों वाला एक बड़ा हॉल भी है जिसकी ऊंचाई 61 मीटर है। इस हाल को बदल महल के रूप में जाना जाता है और इसका उपयोग सम्मेलनों और बैठकों के लिए किया जाता था।
किला परिसर के अंदर गणेश मंदिर भी स्थित है यहां आने वाले भक्तों और पर्यटकों के बीच काफी प्रसिद्ध है। मान्यताओं की माने तो बता दें कि अगर कोई अपनी इच्छाओं को लेकर भगवान गणेश को पत्र लिखकर भेजता है तो उसकी इच्छाएं जरुर पूरी होती हैं।
‘रणथम्भौर राष्ट्रीय उद्यान’ उत्तर भारत में सबसे बड़ा वन्यजीव संरक्षण स्थल है। यह राजस्थान के सबसे प्रसिद्ध स्थानों में से एक है। वर्ष 1955 में यह वन्यजीव अभयारण्य के रूप में स्थापित किया गया था। बाद में 1973 में ‘प्रोजेक्ट टाइगर’ के पहले चरण में इसको शामिल किया गया। इस अभयारण्य को 1981 में राष्ट्रीय उद्यान का दर्जा प्रदान किया गया था। बाघों के अलावा यह राष्ट्रीय अभ्यारण्य विभिन्न जंगली जानवरों, सियार, चीते, लकड़बग्घा, दलदली मगरमच्छ, जंगली सुअर और हिरणों की विभिन्न किस्मों के लिए एक प्राकृतिक निवास स्थान उपलब्ध कराता है। इसके अतिरिक्त यहाँ जलीय वनस्पति, जैसे- लिली, डकवीड और कमल की बहुतायत है। रणथम्भौर राष्ट्रीय अभ्यारण्य हाड़ौती के पठार के किनारे पर स्थित है। यह चंबल नदी के उत्तर और बनास नदी के दक्षिण में विशाल मैदानी भूभाग पर फैला है। अभ्यारण्य का क्षेत्रफल 392 वर्ग कि.मी. है। इस विशाल अभ्यारण्य में कई झीलें हैं, जो वन्यजीवों के लिए अनुकूल प्राकृतिक वातावरण और जलस्रोत उपलब्ध कराती हैं। इस अभ्यारण्य का नाम प्रसिद्ध रणथम्भौर दुर्ग पर रखा गया है।
