बौद्ध के लिए स्वर्णयुग था सम्राट अशोक का दौर

सम्राट अशोक के कालखंड में भारत का जितना नाम हुआ, उतना बहुत कम दौर में हुआ है। अधिकतर भारतीय इतिहासकारो का यह मानना है की सम्राट अशोक ने कलिंग युद्ध की विभीषिका से दुखी होके बौद्ध धर्म ग्रहण किया था, इस घटना पर कई फ़िल्म और सीरियल भी बन चुके हैं जिस कारण आम धारणा भी यही बन गई । पर क्या यह घटना सत्य है? क्या वास्तव में अशोक ने युद्ध की विभीषिका से दुखी होके बौद्ध धर्म अपनाया था? क्या वास्तव में वह बौद्ध बना था? प्रसिद्द इतिहासकारो एवं दुनिया के मशहूर विद्वानों ने सम्राट अशोक की तुलना विश्व इतिहास की प्रसिद्ध विभूतियाँ कांस्टेटाइन, ऐटोनियस, अकबर, सेन्टपॉल, नेपोलियन सीजर के साथ की है।
अशोक का देवानाम्प्रिय एवं प्रियदर्शी आदि नामों से भी उल्लेख किया जाता है। उसके समय मौर्य राज्य उत्तर में हिन्दुकुश की श्रेणियों से लेकर दक्षिण में गोदावरी नदी के दक्षिण तथा मैसूर, कर्नाटक तक तथा पूर्व में बंगाल से पश्चिम में अफ़ग़ानिस्तान तक पहुँच गया था। यह उस समय तक का सबसे बड़ा भारतीय साम्राज्य था। सम्राट अशोक को अपने विस्तृत साम्राज्य के बेहतर कुशल प्रशासन तथा बौद्ध धर्म के प्रचार के लिए जाना जाता है। जीवन के उत्तरार्ध में अशोक गौतम बुद्ध का भक्त हो गया और उन्हीं की स्मृति में उसने एक स्तम्भ खड़ा कर दिया जो आज भी नेपाल में उनके जन्मस्थल – लुम्बिनी में ‘मायादेवी मन्दिर’ के पास अशोक स्तम्भ के रूप में देखा जा सकता है। उसने बौद्ध धर्म का प्रचार भारत के अलावा श्रीलंका, अफ़ग़ानिस्तान, पश्चिम एशिया, मिस्र तथा यूनान में भी करवाया। अशोक के अभिलेखों में प्रजा के प्रति कल्याणकारी दृष्टिकोण की अभिव्यक्ति की गई है।
अशोक ने बौद्ध धर्म प्रचार और प्रशासन के निमित्त देश-विदेश में तमाम अभिलेख व शिलालेख खुदवाकर महत्वपूर्ण स्थलों पर रखवाए थे। तब ये शिलालेख-अभिलेख उसके सुशासन में मदद किए और कालान्तर में प्राचीन भारत का इतिहास लिखने में भी इसने महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई है। इसी तरह का एक लघुलेख बिहार के कैमूर जिले में एक पहाड़ी पर अवस्खित मगर कुछ विवाद के कारण इसके नष्ट होने की आशंका पैदा हो गई है। सवाल हैदा हो गया है कि इतिहास की कड़ियों को जोड़ने वाले इस ऐतिहासिक साक्ष्य को कैसे बचाया जाए। बिहार में कैमूर पहाड़ी पर मौजूद है मौर्य सम्राट अशोक महान का लघु शिलालेख । ब्राह्मी लिपि में इस पर उत्कीर्ण लेख है–एलेन च अंतलेन जंबुदीपसि। इस पंक्ति का अर्थ है- जम्बू द्वीप (भारत) में सभी धर्मो के लोग सहिष्णुता से रहें। आज यह शिलालेख पहाड़ी पर वर्षो से ताले में कैद है।
सम्राट अशोक प्राचीन भारत के मौर्य सम्राट बिंदुसार का पुत्र था। जिसका जन्म लगभग 304 ई. पूर्व में माना जाता है। 272 ई. पूर्व अशोक को राजगद्दी मिली और 232 ई. पूर्व तक उसने शासन किया। अशोक ने 40 वर्ष राज्य किया। चंद्रगुप्त की सैनिक प्रसार की नीति ने वह स्थायी सफलता नहीं प्राप्त की, जो अशोक की धम्म विजय ने की थी।
कलिंग के युद्ध के बाद अशोक ने व्यक्ति गत रूप से बौद्ध धर्म अपना लिया । अशोक के शासनकाल में ही पाटलिपुत्र में तृतीय बौद्ध संगीति का आयोजन किया गया, जिसकी अध्यक्षता मोगाली पुत्र तिष्या ने की । इसी में अभिधम्मपिटक की रचना हुई और बौद्ध भिक्षु विभिन्न देशों में भेजे गये जिनमें स्वयं सम्राट अशोक के पुत्र महेन्द्र एवं पुत्री संघमित्रा को श्रीलंका भेजा गया ।
एच. जी. वेल्स के अनुसार अशोक का चरित्र “इतिहास के स्तम्भों को भरने वाले राजाओं, सम्राटों, धर्माधिकारियों, सन्त-महात्माओं आदि के बीच प्रकाशमान है और आकाश में प्रायः एकाकी तारा की तरह चमकता है ।” अशोक ने बौद्ध धर्म को अपना लिया और साम्राज्य के सभी साधनों को जनता के कल्याण हेतु लगा दिया ।
अशोक ने बौद्ध धर्म के प्रचार के लिए निम्नलिखित साधन अपनाये-
(अ) धर्मयात्राओं का प्रारम्भ,
(ब) राजकीय पदाधिकारियों की नियुक्ति,
(स) धर्म महापात्रों की नियुक्ति,
(द) दिव्य रूपों का प्रदर्शन,
(य) धर्म श्रावण एवं धर्मोपदेश की व्यवस्था,
(और) लोकाचारिता के कार्य,
(ल) धर्मलिपियों का खुदवाना,
(ह) विदेशों में धर्म प्रचार को प्रचारक भेजना आदि।
अशोक ने बौद्ध धर्म का प्रचार का प्रारम्भ धर्मयात्राओं से किया। वह अभिषेक के 10वें वर्ष बोधगया की यात्रा पर गया। कलिंग युद्ध के बाद आमोद-प्रमोद की यात्राओं पर पाबन्दी लगा दी। अपने अभिषेक के 20वें वर्ष में लुम्बिनी ग्राम की यात्रा की। नेपाल तराई में स्थित निगलीवा में उसने कनकमुनि के स्तूप की मरम्मत करवाई। बौद्ध धर्म के प्रचार के लिए अपने साम्राज्य के उच्च पदाधिकारियों को नियुक्त किया। स्तम्भ लेख तीन और सात के अनुसार उसने व्युष्ट, संयुक्ताक्षर, प्रादेशिक तथा युक्त नामक पदाधिकारियों को जनता के बीच जाकर धर्म प्रचार करने और उपदेश देने का आदेश दिया। अभिषेक के 13वें वर्ष के बाद उसने बौद्ध धर्म प्रचार हेतु पदाधिकारियों का एक नया वर्ग बनाया जिसे धर्म महापात्र कहा गया था।
