वीणा एक ऐसा वाद्य यंत्र है जिसका प्रयोग शास्त्रीय संगीत में किया जाता है। सामान्यतया वाद्य यन्त्र चार तरह के होते हैं– तत् वाद्य अथवा तार वाद्य, सुषिर वाद्य अथवा वायु वाद्य (हवा के वाद्य), अवनद्व वाद्य और चमड़े के वाद्य (ताल वाद्य ; झिल्ली के कम्पन वाले वाद्ययंत्र), और घन वाद्य या आघात वाद्य ( ठोस वाद्य, जिन्हें समस्वर स्तर में करने की आवश्यकता नहीं होती।
वीणा एक तत वाद्य है। सामान्य तौर पर इसमें चार तार होते हैं और तारों की लंबाई में किसी प्रकार का विभाजन (fret) नहीं होता (जबकि सितार में विभाजन किया जाता है)। इस कारण वीणा प्राचीन संगीत के लिये ज्यादा उपयुक्त है। वीणा में तारों की कंपन एक गोलाकार घड़े से तीव्रतर होती है तथा कई आवृत्ति (frequency) की ध्वनियों के मिलने से हार्मोनिक (harmonic) ध्वनि उत्पन्न होता है। सुरवाद्य होने के लिये ऐसी ध्वनियाँ आवश्यक हैं। विचित्र वीणा से प्रभावित हो कई कलाकार इसके आकार को छोटा करने का प्रयास कर चुके हैं किन्तु उससे ध्वनि का गाम्भीर्य भी परिवर्तित हो जाता है।
गिटार को कुछ परिवर्तनों के साथ भारतीय सन्गीत हेतु उपयुक्त बना विश्वमोहन भट्ट उसे मोहन वीणा के नाम से प्रचलित कर चुके हैं यद्यपि यह चौकोर सपाट ब्रिज के अभाव में वीणा की अवधारणा पूरी नहीं करता। यह कमी रन्जन वीणा पूरी करती है।
प्राचीन ग्रन्थों में गायन के साथ वीणा की संगति का उल्लेख मिलता है। वीणा का प्राचीनतम रूप एक-तन्त्री वीणा है। वीणा वस्तुत: तंत्री वाद्यों का सँरचनात्मक नाम है। तंत्री या तारों के अलावा इसमें घुड़च, तरब के तार तथा सारिकाएँ होती हैं। प्राचीन काल में भारत के वाद्यों में वीणा मुख्य थी। इसका उल्लेख प्राचीन संस्कृत ग्रन्थों में भी उपलब्ध होता है। सरस्वती और नारद का वीणा वादन तो प्रसिद्ध है।
यह मान्यता है की मध्यकाल में अमीर खुसरो दहलवी ने सितार की रचना वीणा और बैंजो को मिलाकर किया, कुछ इसे गिटार का भी रूप बताते हैं। वीणा में 4 तार होते हैं और तारों की लंबाई में किसी प्रकार का विभाजन नहीं होता। वीणा में तारों की कंपन एक गोलाकार घड़े से तीव्रतर होती है तथा कई आवृति की ध्वनियों के मिलने से लयबद्ध ध्वनि का जनन होता है। वीणा के कई प्रकार विकसित हुए हैं। जैसे – रुद्रवीणा, विचित्र वीणा.
इसके इतिहास के बारे में अनेक मत हैं किंतु अपनी पुस्तक भारतीय संगीत वाद्य में प्रसिद्ध विचित्र वीणा वादक डॉ लालमणि मिश्र ने इसे प्राचीन त्रितंत्री वीणा का विकसित रूप सिद्ध किया। सितार पूर्ण भारतीय वाद्य है क्योंकि इसमें भारतीय वाद्योँ की तीनों विशेषताएं हैं। वीणा वस्तुत: तंत्री वाद्यों का सँरचनात्मक नाम है। तंत्री या तारों के अलावा इसमें घुड़च, तरब के तार तथा सारिकाएँ होती हैं।
एक पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार वीणा का सृजन स्वयं भगवान शिव ने पार्वती देवी के रूप को समर्पित करते हुए किया था। कई बार नारीत्व के सौंदर्य के प्रसंग में भी वीणा का उल्लेख होता है। ताज्जुब नहीं कि वीणा कन्याओं के नाम के लिये बड़ा लोकप्रिय नाम रहा है। वैदिक साहित्य में वीणा का उल्लेख बारंबार संगीत के संदर्भ में होता है। मध्यकाल तक भी विभिन्न कलात्मक कृतियों में वीणा को शास्त्रीय संगीत से जोड़ा जाता रहा। उत्तर भारत में वीणा का स्थान प्रायः सितार ने लिया किंतु दक्षिण भारत में वीणा आज तक लोकप्रिय माना जा सकता है। हिन्दुओं में ज्ञान व प्रायः संगीत की देवी सरस्वती को तकरीबन हमेशा ही वीणा के साथ दिखाया जाता है। सरस्वती देवी की प्रसिद्ध वन्दना में उन्हें वीणावरदंडमंडितकरा से संबोधित किया जाता है।
