आप में से कई लोगों ने दूरदर्शन पर सिंहासन बतीसी देखा होगा। कई लोगों ने इसे पढ़ा भी होगा। असल में, सिंहासन बत्तीसी (संस्कृत – सिंहासन द्वात्रिंशिका, विक्रमचरित) एक लोककथा संग्रह है। प्रजा से प्रेम करने वाले, न्याय प्रिय, जननायक, प्रयोगवादी एवं दूरदर्शी महाराजा विक्रमादित्य भारतीय लोककथाओं के एक बहुत ही चर्चित पात्र रहे हैं। उनके इन अद्भुत गुणों का बखान करती अनेक कथाएं हम बचपन से ही पढ़ते आए हैं। सिंहासन बत्तीसी भी ऐसी ही 32 कथाओं का संग्रह है, जिसमें 32 पुतलियां विक्रमादित्य के विभिन्न गुणों का कहानी के रूप में वर्णन करती हैं।
आपको बता दें कि सिंहासन बत्तीसी मूलतः संस्कृत की रचना है, जो उत्तरी संस्करण में सिंहासनद्वात्रिंशति तथा विक्रमचरित के नाम से दक्षिणी संस्करण में उपलब्ध है। पहले के संस्कर्ता एक मुनि कहे जाते हैं जिनका नाम क्षेभेन्द्र था। बंगाल में वररुचि के द्वारा प्रस्तुत संस्करण भी इसी के समरुप माना जाता है। इसका दक्षिणी रुप ज्यादा लोकप्रिय हुआ और स्थानीय भाषाओं में इसके अनुवाद होते रहे हैं। पौराणिक कथाओं की तरह भारतीय समाज में मौखिक परम्परा के रुप में रच-बस गए।
विद्वानों के अनुसार, इतना लगभग तय है कि इनकी रचना धारा के राजा भोज के समय में नहीं हुई। चूंकि प्रत्येक कथा राजा भोज का उल्लेख करती है, अतः इसका रचना काल 11वीं शताब्दी के बाद होगा। इसे द्वात्रींशत्पुत्तलिका के नाम से भी जाना जाता है।
एक दिन राजा भोज को मालूम होता है कि एक साधारण-सा चरवाहा अपनी न्यायप्रियता के लिए विख्यात है, जबकि वह बिल्कुल अनपढ़ है तथा पुश्तैनी रुप से उनके ही राज्य के कुम्हारों की गायें, भैंसे तथा बकरियां चराता है। जब राजा भोज ने जानकारी कराई, तो पता चला कि वह चरवाहा सारे फैसले एक टीले पर चढ़कर करता है। राजा भोज की जिज्ञासा बढ़ी और उन्होंने खुद भेष बदलकर उस चरवाहे को एक जटिल मामले में फैसला करते देखा। उसके फैसले और आत्मविश्वास से भोज इतना अधिक प्रभावित हुए कि उन्होंने उससे उसकी इस अद्वितीय क्षमता के बारे में जानना चाहा। जब चरवाहे ने जिसका नाम चन्द्रभान था, बताया कि उसमें यह शक्ति टीले पर बैठने के बाद स्वतः चली आती है, भोज ने सोच-विचार कर टीले को खुदवाकर देखने का फैसला किया।
जब खुदाई संपन्न हुई, तो एक राजसिंहासन मिट्टी में दबा दिखा। यह सिंहासन कारीगरी का अभूतपूर्व रुप प्रस्तुत करता था। इसमें बत्तीस पुतलियां लगी थीं तथा कीमती रत्न जड़े हुए थे। जब धूल-मिट्टी की सफाई हुई तो सिंहासन की सुंदरता देखते बनती थी। उसे उठाकर महल लाया गया तथा शुभ मुहूर्त में राजा का बैठना निश्चित किया गया। ज्योंहि राजा ने बैठने का प्रयास किया सारी पुतलियां राजा का उपहास करने लगीं। खिलखिलाने का कारण पूछने पर सारी पुतलियां एक-एक कर विक्रमादित्य की कहानी सुनाने लगीं तथा बोली कि इस सिंहासन जो कि राजा विक्रमादित्य का है, पर बैठने वाला उसकी तरह योग्य, पराक्रमी, दानवीर तथा विवेकशील होना चाहिए।
ये कथाएं इतनी लोकप्रिय हैं कि कई संकलनकर्त्ताओं ने इन्हें अपनी-अपनी तरह से प्रस्तुत किया है। सभी संकलनों में पुतलियों के नाम दिए गए हैं पर हर संकलन में कथाओं में कथाओं के क्रम में तथा नामों में और उनके क्रम में भिन्नता पाई जाती है।
