श्राद्ध-पक्ष का समापन और दुर्गा पूजा के आने से एक दिन पहले आकाशवाणी पर अलसुबह 4 बजे आपने एक आवाज सुनी होगी. महिषासुर-मर्दनी की स्तुति में किया जाने वाला यह पाठ महालया के अवसर पर होता है. पश्चिम बंगाल में तो महिषासुर-मर्दनी का पाठ सुने बिना दुर्गा पूजा की शुरुआत होना संभव ही नहीं है. लोग महालया के दिन सुबह 4 बजे ही उठ जाते हैं और अपने-अपने रेडियो सेट खोलकर बैठ जाते हैं.
हिन्दू धर्मग्रंथों के अनुसार, दुर्गा पूजा से पहले के 15 दिनों में पितृपक्ष यानी पितरों के श्राद्ध का पखवाड़ा होता है. भाद्रपद यानी भादो मास की अमावस्या का पूरा 15 दिन पितरों के श्राद्ध के रूप में समर्पित होता है. अमावस्या की समाप्ति और दुर्गा पूजा के शुरू होने से पहले महालया होता है. संस्कृत में महालया शब्द का आशय उत्सवों की शुरुआत है. संस्कतृ के ‘मह’ शब्द का अर्थ उत्सव होता है और ‘आलय’ का तात्पर्य ‘घर’ है. यानी महालया को उत्सवों की शुरुआत के तौर पर भी मान्यता प्राप्त है. धर्मशास्त्र के अनुसार, पितृपक्ष के दौरान लोगों को अपने पितरों का श्राद्ध करना पड़ता है. ऐसी मान्यता है कि पितृपक्ष के दौरान सभी पितर पिंडदान लेने के लिए धरती पर आते हैं. इस दौरान अगर उनके वंशज उन्हें पिंडदान नहीं देते तो वे नाराज हो जाते हैं.
पितृपक्ष की समाप्ति और महालया की शुरुआत के बाद आमतौर पर माना जाता है कि पितर धरती से वापस चले गए. लेकिन शास्त्रों में इस बात का भी उल्लेख है कि कार्तिक कृष्णपक्ष अमावस्या के दिन भी पितरों को पिंडदान किया जा सकता है. कार्तिक कृष्णपक्ष की अमावस्या के दिन ही दीपावली मनाई जाती है. अगर इस आखिरी दिन भी कोई वंशज अपने पितर को पिंडदान नहीं देता है, तो उसे पितरों की नाराजगी का सामना करना पड़ता है. यही वजह है कि महालया के दिन को उत्सवों की शुरुआत मानते हुए पवित्र माना जाता है.
महालया से जुड़ी एक और मान्यता है. महालया वह समय काल है, जिसमें मां दुर्गा ने असुरों का सर्वनाश किया था. बंगाली इस दिन को बहुत महत्व देते हैं और आज भी बंगाल के कई हिस्सों में इसे धूमधाम से मनाया जाता है. इस दिन मां दुर्गा के पराक्रम से जुड़े नाटक किए जाते हैं, जिसमें वे असुरों का वध करती हैं. पौराणिक कथाओं के अनुसार, लंका का राजा रावण जब माता सीता का हरण कर लिया था, तब हनुमान जी ने माता सीता का पता लगाया था. इसके बाद माता सीता को बचाने और लंका पर चढ़ाई से पूर्व भगवान श्रीराम ने महालया के दिन ही देवी दुर्गा की आराधना की थी.
