जब भी देश में स्वतंत्रता दिवस, गणतंत्र दिवस आदि जैसे राष्ट्रीय महत्व के आयोजन होते हैं, तो गांधी टोपी पहने नेता और कार्यकर्ता देखने में आते हैं. यदि हम यह कहें कि गांधी टोपी आजादी की प्रतीक है, तो कोई अतिश्योक्ति नहीं होगी. दूसरी ओर, क्या आपको यह पता है कि महात्मा गांधी ने यह टोपी कब और कहां पहनी थी ? क्या आपने उन्हें टोपी पहने देखा है ? आखिर यह गांधी टोपी कैसे आजादी का प्रतीक बन गया ?
बात उस समय की है जब मोहन दास गांधी दक्षिण अफ्रीका में वकालत करते थे. वहाँ अंग्रेजों के द्वारा किए जा रहे अत्याचारों से दुखी होकर मोहन दास गांधी ने सत्याग्रह का मार्ग अपनाया था. उस समय अंग्रेजों ने एक नियम बना रखा था कि हर भारतीय को अपनी फिंगरप्रिंट्स यानि हाथों की निशानी देनी होगी. गाँधीजी इस नियम का विरोध करने लगे और उन्होंने स्वैच्छा से अपनी गिरफ्तारी दी. जेल में भी गाँधीजी को भेदभाव से दो चार होना पड़ा, क्योंकि अंग्रेजों ने भारतीय कैदियों के लिए एक विशेष प्रकार की टोपी पहनना जरूरी कर दिया था. आगे चलकर गाँधीजी इस टोपी को हमेशा के लिए धारण करना और प्रसारित करना शुरू कर दिया जिससे कि लोगों को अपने साथ हो रहे भेदभाव याद रहें. यही टोपी आगे चलकर गांधी टोपी के रूप में जानी गई. असल में, गांधी टोपी खादी से बनाई जाती है और आगे और पीछे से जुड़ीं हुई होती है, तथा उसका मध्य भाग फुला हुआ होता है.
बता दें कि गाँधीजी जब भारत आए तो उन्होंने यह टोपी नहीं बल्कि पगडी पहनी हुई थी और उसके बाद उन्होंने कभी पगडी अथवा गांधी टोपी भी नहीं पहनी थी, लेकिन भारतीय नेताओं और सत्याग्रहियों ने इस टोपी को आसानी से अपना लिया. काँग्रेस पार्टी ने इस टोपी को गाँधीजी के साथ जोडा और अपने प्रचारकों एवं स्वयंसेवकों को इसे पहनने के लिए प्रोत्साहित किया. इस प्रकार राजनीतिक कारणों से ही सही परंतु इस टोपी की पहुँच लाखों ऐसे लोगों तक हो गई जो किसी भी प्रकार की टोपी धारण नहीं करते थे.
भारतीय नेता और राजनैतिक दल इस प्रकार की टोपी के अलग अलग प्रारूप इस्तेमाल करते थे. सुभाष चन्द्र बोस खाकी रंग की तो हिन्दू महासभा और राष्ट्रीय स्वयंसेवक संघ के कार्यकर्ता काले रंग की टोपी पहनते थे. आज भी इस टोपी की प्रासंगिकता बनी हुई है. जहाँ भारतीय राष्ट्रीय काँग्रेस इसे अभी भी अपनाए हुई है वहीं समाजवादी पार्टी के कार्यकर्ता लाल रंग की गांधी टोपी पहनते हैं.
वास्तव में इस प्रकार की टोपी भारत के कई प्रदेशों जैसे कि उत्तर प्रदेश, गुजरात, बंगाल, कर्नाटक, बिहार और महाराष्ट्र में सदियों से पहनी जाती रही है. मध्यमवर्ग से लेकर उच्च वर्ग के लोग बिना किसी राजनैतिक हस्तक्षेप के इसे पहनते आए हैं. इस प्रकार से देखा जाए तो महात्मा गांधी के जन्म से पहले भी इस टोपी का अस्तित्व था|
