दोहा एक मासिक छंद है जिसके प्रथम और तृतीय चरण में 13,13 मात्राएं होती है, और दूसरे और अंतिम चरण में 11,11 मात्राएं होती है। इसमें 24 ,24 मात्रा की दो पंक्तियां होती है। दोहा में 24,24 मात्रा की दो पंक्ति होती है तथा अंतिम में एक गुरु और (s की तरह ) एक लघु (l की तरह) होता है। ‘दोहा’ या ‘दूहा’ की उत्पत्ति कतिपय लेखकों ने संस्कृत के दोधक से मानी है। ‘प्राकृतपैगलम्’ के टीकाकारों ने इसका मूल ‘द्विपदा’ शब्द को बताया है। यह उत्तरकालीन अपभ्रंश का प्रमुख छन्द है।
प्राकृत साहित्य में जो स्थान गाथा का है, प्रयोग की दृष्टि से अपभ्रंश में वही स्थान दोहा छन्द का है। अपभ्रंश में मुक्तक पद्यों के रूप में अनेक दोहे मिलते हैं। प्राकृत में जिस प्रकार ‘गाथासप्तसती’ तथा ‘बज्जालग्ग’ जैसे गाथाबद्ध संग्रह मिलते हैं, उसी प्रकार अपभ्रंश में और हिन्दी में दोहे के संग्रह मिलते हैं। उपदेश, मुक्तक पद्यों के रूप में तो दोहे का प्रयोग मुनि योगेन्द्र, रामसिंह, देवसेन तथा बौद्ध सिद्धों ने किया है। हेमचन्द्र तथा अन्य ‘अलंकार शास्त्र’, व्याकरण ग्रन्थ लेखकों ने अनेक दोहे अपनी कृतियों में उद्धृत किये हैं। स्वयंभू के ‘पउमचरिउ’ में भी दोहे का प्रयोग मिलता है। यह छन्द हिन्दी को अपभ्रंश से मिला है। सभी अपभ्रंश छन्द शास्त्र विषयक कृतियों में दोहे तथा उसके भेदों का विवेचन मिलता है।
प्राचीन अपभ्रंश में इस छन्द का प्रयोग कम मिलता है, तथापि सिद्ध कवि सरहपा ने इसका सबसे पहले प्रयोग किया। एक मतानुसार ‘विक्रमोर्वशीय’ में इसका सबसे प्राचीन रूप उपलब्ध है। फिर भी पाँचवीं या छठी शताब्दी के पश्चात् दोहा काफ़ी प्रयोग में आता रहा। हाल की सतसई से भी इसका सूत्र जोड़ा जाता है। यह तर्क प्रबल रूप से प्रस्तुत किया जाता है कि कदाचित यह लोक-प्रचलित छन्द रहा होगा। दोहा दो पंक्तियों का छन्द है। ‘बड़ो दूहो’, ‘तूँवेरी दूहो’ तथा ‘अनमेल दूहो’, तीन प्रकार राजस्थानी में और मिलते हैं। प्राचीन दोहा के पहले और तीसरे चरण में 13-13 मात्राएँ तथा दूसरे और चौथे में 11-11 मात्राएँ होती हैं। ‘बड़ो दूहो’ में 1 और 4 चरण 11-11 मात्राओं के तथा 2 और 3 चरण 13-13 मात्राओं के होते हैं। ‘तूँवेरी दूहो’ में मात्राओं का यह क्रम उलटा है। पहले और चौथे चरण की तुक मिलने से ‘मध्यमेल दूहो’ बनते हैं। दोहा लोकसाहित्य का सबसे सरलतम छन्द है, जिसे साहित्य में यश प्राप्त हो सका।
‘प्राकृतपैगलम्’ के अनुसार इस छन्द के प्रथम तथा तृतीय पाद में 13-13 मात्राएँ और दूसरे तथा चौथे में 11-11 मात्राएँ होती हैं। यदि पदान्त में होती है; विषम चरणों के आदि में जगण नहीं होना चाहिए। अन्त में लघु होता है। तुक प्राय: सम पादों की मिलती है। मात्रिक गणों का क्रम इस प्रकार रहता है- 6+4+3, 6+4+1.
हिन्दी में यह प्राय: सभी प्रमुख कवियों द्वारा प्रयुक्त हुआ है। पद शैली के कवि सूरदास, मीरां आदि ने अपने पदों में इसका प्रयोग किया है। सतसई साहित्य में ‘दोहा छन्द’ ही प्रयुक्त हुआ है। दोहा ‘मुक्तक काव्य’ का प्रधान छन्द है। इसमें संक्षिप्त और तीखी भावव्यंजना, प्रभावशाली लघु चित्रों को प्रस्तुत करने की अपूर्व क्षमता है।
सतसई के अतिरिक्त दोहे का दूसरा महत्त्वपूर्ण प्रयोग भक्तियुग की प्रबन्ध काव्यशैली में हुआ है, जिसमें तुलसीदास का ‘रामचरितमानस’ और जायसी का ‘पद्मावत’ प्रमुख है। चौपाई के प्रबन्धात्मक प्रवाह में दोहा गम्भीर गति प्रदान करता है और कथाक्रम में समुचित सन्तुलन भी लाता है। दोहे का तीसरा प्रयोग रीतिग्रन्थ में लक्षण-निरूपण और उदाहरण प्रस्तुत करने के लिए किया गया है। अपने संक्षेप के कारण ही दोहा छन्द लक्षण प्रस्तुत करने के लिए प्रयुक्त हुआ है।
