किसी कार्य को बहुत ही चतुराई और उत्तम प्रणाली से करने के लिए हिन्दी में आम प्रचलित शब्द है प्रवीण। किसी कार्य में दक्ष या निष्णात या सिद्धहस्त होने के लिए इस शब्द का प्रयोग होता है। किसी वक्त प्रवीण का अर्थ होता था वह व्यक्ति जो वीणा बजाने में कुशल हो। वीणा प्राचीनतम् भारतीय वाद्य है। भारतीय देवी-देवताओं के हाथों में वीणा ही नजर आती है। वीणा बजाने में सिद्धहस्त कलाकार को प्रवीण कहा जाने लगा। स्पष्ट है कि वीणावादन का उस काल में कितना महत्वरहा होगा। कालान्तर में हर तरह के कार्य को कुशलता से करनेवाले के लिए प्रवीण शब्द प्रचलित हो गया और इसका मूलार्थ लोप हो गया। विडम्बना यह भी रही कि उत्तर भारतीय संगीत से भी वीणा की परम्परा धीरे धीरे कम होती चली गई, अलबत्ता दक्षिण भारत में उत्तर की बनिस्बत वीणा का चलन कहीं ज्यादा है।
आपटे कोश में के अनुसार वीणा (वेति वृद्धिमात्रमपगच्छति- वी+न, नि. णत्वम्) का अर्थ सारंगी जैसा वाद्य, बीना, बताया गया है। इसके अलावा इसका एक अन्य अर्थ विद्युत भी है। संस्कृत की वी धातु में जाना, हिलना-डुलना, व्याप्त होना, पहुंचना जैसे भाव हैं। बिजली की तेज गति, चारों और व्याप्ति से भी वी में निहित अर्थ स्पष्ट है। विद्युत की व्युत्पत्ति भी वी+द्युति से बताई जाती है। वी अर्थात व्याप्ति और द्युति यानी चमक, कांति, प्रकाश आदि। प्रकाश की तीव्र कौंध ही विद्युत है। वी से बने हैं वेति, वेत या वीत जैसे शब्द जिनसे बने कुछ शब्द हिन्दी में प्रचलित हैं जैसे चरैवेति यानी बढ़ते चलो। वीत भी गतिवाचक है जिसमें जाने का भाव है। चले जाना। इससे बना एक शब्द है वीतराग अर्थात सौम्य, शान्त, सादा, निरावेश। राग का अर्थ कामना, इच्छा, रंग, भावना होता है। वीतराग वह है जिसने सब कुछ त्याग दिया हो। एक पौराणिक ऋषि का नाम भी वीतराग था। वीतरागी वह है जो संसार से निर्लिप्त रहता है। जाहिर है एक तन्त्रवाद्य होने के नाते वीणा की वी से व्युत्पत्ति में तीव्रता के साथ इसकी मधुर स्वर लहरियों की सब दूर व्याप्ति का भाव भी है। इन्हीं शब्दों के पूर्ववैदिक रूप वेण, वीण या वेणि रहे होंगे।
