दुनिया के आधे बौद्ध लोग चीन में रहते हैं. लेकिन चीन की कुल आबादी में वे 18 फीसदी ही हैं. इसके अलावा अधिकतर बौद्ध लोग पूर्वी और दक्षिण पूर्वी एशिया में बसते हैं. 13 फीसदी थाईलैंड में और नौ फीसदी जापान में. वैसे थाईलैंड की 93 फीसदी आबादी बौद्ध है. एशिया में ऐसे भी बहुत लोग हैं जो धर्म से तो बौद्ध नहीं है लेकिन बौद्ध धर्म का पालन जरूर करते हैं. ऐसे लोगों के लिए ये जीने का एक तरीका है, गौतम बुद्ध की एक सीख है.
2015 के आंकड़ों के अनुसार दुनिया की कुल आबादी में तकरीबन सात फीसदी हिस्सा बौद्ध लोगों का है. लेकिन कुछ शोध अनुमान लगाते हैं कि 2060 तक वे सिर्फ पांच फीसदी ही रह जाएंगे. ऐसा इसलिए क्योंकि बड़ी संख्या में लोग बौद्ध भिक्षु बन जाते हैं और सन्यासी का जीवन व्यतीत करते हैं.
आपको बता दें कि सिद्धार्थ गौतम का जन्म नेपाल में लुंबिनी के एक हिंदू परिवार में हुआ. बिहार के गया में उन्हें निर्वाण प्राप्त हुआ. बावजूद इसके भारत में महज एक प्रतिशत लोग ही बौद्ध धर्म से नाता रखते हैं. वहीं नेपाल में यह संख्या 10 प्रतिशत है. भारत की तरह अमेरिका की भी एक प्रतिशत आबादी बौद्ध है. ये अधिकतर वे लोग हैं जो एशिया से आ कर अमेरिका में बस गए. इनमें ज्यादातर वियतनाम, दक्षिण कोरिया और जापान के लोग हैं. दुनिया के अन्य धर्मों की तुलना में बौद्ध लोगों की मध्य आयु काफी ज्यादा है. जहां मुसलामानों की मध्य आयु 24 साल, हिंदुओं की 27 साल और ईसाईयों की 30 साल है, वहीं बौद्ध लोगों की मध्य आयु 36 साल है.
दरअसल, जब हम बौद्ध विज्ञान की बात करते हैं, तो हमारा आशय तर्क जैसे विषयों से होता है, हम किस प्रकार विषयों को समझ पाते हैं, और मूलतः वास्तविकता को कैसे समझ पाते हैं ─ ब्रह्मांड की उत्पत्ति किस प्रकार हुई आदि. जैसे विषय ─ चेतन और जड़ पदार्थ के बीच का सम्बंध. इन सभी विषयों का सम्बंध विज्ञान से है, और बौद्ध धर्म इन सभी विषयों पर प्रकाश डालता है.
बौद्ध मनोविज्ञान विभिन्न अशांतकारी अवस्थाओं, विशेषतया हमारे लिए ढेरों दुख उत्पन्न करने वाले अशांतकारी मनोभावों (क्रोध, ईर्ष्या, लोभ, आदि) के विषय की विवेचना करता है. और बौद्ध धर्म में इन अशांतकारी मनोभावों से उत्पन्न होने वाली समस्याओं का समाधान करने के लिए विधियों की एक समृद्ध परम्परा है. वहीं दूसरी ओर, बौद्ध धर्म विभिन्न आनुष्ठानिक पहलुओं, प्रार्थनाओं से सम्बंध रखता है; इसमें पुनर्जन्म जैसे विषयों पर चर्चा की जाती है. और यह भी एक बहुत समृद्ध पक्ष है.
