यदि आपसे हम या कोई और पूछें कि चंद्र ग्रहण क्यों लगता है ? क्या जवाब देंगे ? 16 जुलाई 2019 को इस वर्ष का दूसरा चंद्र ग्रहण लग रहा है. इस दिन क्या होगा ? आइए, हम बताते हैं. इसका सीधा सा जवाब है कि चंद्रमा का पृथ्वी की ओट में आ जाना. उस स्थिति में सूर्य एक तरफ, चंद्रमा दूसरी तरफ और पृथ्वी बीच में होती है. जब चंद्रमा धरती की छाया से निकलता है तो चंद्र ग्रहण पड़ता है.
क्या कारण है कि चंद्र ग्रहण केवल पूर्णिमा को होता है? जब सूर्य व चन्द्रमा के बीच पृथ्वी इस प्रकार से आ जाती है कि पृथ्वी की छाया से चन्द्रमा का पूरा या आंशिक भाग ढक जाता है. जब इस स्थिति में पृथ्वी सूर्य की किरणों के चन्द्रमा तक पहुँचने में अवरोध लगा देती है तो पृथ्वी के उस हिस्से में चन्द्र ग्रहण नज़र आता है. इस ज्यामितीय प्रतिबंध के कारण चन्द्र ग्रहण केवल पूर्णिमा की रात्रि को घटित हो सकता है. चन्द्रमा और सूर्य के बीच में पृथ्वी के आ जाने की खगोलीय घटना को ही चन्द्र ग्रहण कहते हैं.
बता दें कि चंद्र ग्रहण पूर्णिमा के दिन पड़ता है, लेकिन हर पूर्णिमा को चंद्र ग्रहण नहीं पड़ता है. इसका कारण है कि पृथ्वी की कक्षा पर चंद्रमा की कक्षा का झुके होना. यह झुकाव तकरीबन 5 डिग्री है इसलिए हर बार चंद्रमा पृथ्वी की छाया में प्रवेश नहीं करता. उसके ऊपर या नीचे से निकल जाता है. यही बात सूर्यग्रहण के लिए भी सच है. सूर्य ग्रहण हमेशा अमावस्या के दिन होते हैं, क्योंकि चंद्रमा का आकार पृथ्वी के आकार के मुकाबले लगभग 4 गुना कम है। इसकी छाया पृथ्वी पर छोटी आकार की पड़ती है इसीलिए पूर्णता की स्थिति में सूर्य ग्रहण पृथ्वी के एक छोटे से हिस्से से ही देखा जा सकता है. लेकिन चंद्र ग्रहण की स्थिति में धरती की छाया चंद्रमा के मुकाबले काफी बड़ी होती है. लिहाजा, इससे गुजरने में चंद्रमा को ज्यादा वक्त लगता है.
