उन्होंने हिंदी फिल्मों के कई टीवी शो में बतौर प्रस्तोता काम किया है. फिलहाल वह 92.7 पर शो सुहाना सफर विद अन्नू कपूर होस्ट कर रहे हैं. यह एक डेली शो है और इसकी टैगलाइन हैं- फ़िल्मी दुनिया की कही अनकही कहानियां.
अन्नू कपूर बॉलीवुड के उन कलाकारों में से हैं जो लीड रोल में ना होने बावजूद नोटिस किए जाते हैं. जिस फिल्म में काम करते हैं वो हिट हो या फ्लॉप लेकिन अन्नू कपूर का किरदार दमदार होता है. फिल्मों से इतर टीवी शो की बात करें तो जिस शो को वो होस्ट करते हैं उसे सदाबहार बना देते हैं. अन्नू कपूर को जो किरदार मिलता है उसे जीवंत बना देते हैं.
अन्नू कपूर का शो ‘सुहाना सफर’ काफी फेमस है. इस शो में अन्नू कपूर फिल्मी दुनिया की कुछ अनकही कहानियां सुनाते हैं. सभी फिल्मी सितारों के किस्से सुनाने वाले अन्नू कपूर की कहानी शायद किसी ने नहीं सुनी होगी. अन्नू कपूर का जन्म एक पंजाबी परिवार में हुआ था और उनकी मां बंगाली थी. अन्नू कपूर के पिता पारसी थिएटर कंपनी चलाते थे. अन्नूु कपूर की मां एक क्लासिकल डांसर थीं. घर में आर्थिक तंगी होने के कारण अपनी पढ़ाई नहीं पूरी कर पाए. उनकी मां 40 रुपए की सैलरी पर एक स्कूल में पढ़ाती थीं. अन्नू आईएएस ऑफिसर बनना चाहते थे. लेकिन पढ़ाई पूरी ना हो पाने की वजह से ऐसा नहीं हो पाया. अपने परिवार की आर्थिक मदद के लिए चाय का स्टॉल लगाया. जब ये काम नहीं चला तो चूरन के नोट बेचा करते थे.
इतना ही नहीं, अन्नू लॉटरी टिकट भी बेचते थे. अन्नू कपूर ने अपने पिता की कंपनी ज्वॉइन कर ली. साथ ही दिल्ली के नेशनल स्कूल ऑफ ड्रामा में एडमिशन ले लिया. एक थिएटर में प्ले के दौरान अन्नू कपूर ने 23 साल की उम्र में 70 साल के बुड्ढे का रोल निभाया था. इस नाटक को देखने के लिए फिल्म मेकर श्याम बेनेगल भी पहुंचे थे. उन्हें अन्नू की परफॉर्मेंस बहुत पसंद आई. उन्होंने अन्नू को तारीफों भरा पात्र लिखा और मिलने को बुलाया. अन्नू कपूर ने अपने करियर की शुरुआत श्याम बेनेगल की फिल्म ‘मंदी’ से की थी. अन्नू कपूर कभी लीड एक्टर के तौर पर नजर नहीं आए लेकिन उन्होंने अपने अभिनय की छाप हमेशा छोड़ी. फिल्मों के अलावा अन्नू कपूर ने कई टीवी शो होस्ट किए हैं. अन्नू कपूर को हिंदू शास्त्रों का भी ज्ञान है.
बड़ी ही बेबाकी से अनु कपूर ने साफ शब्दों में कहा कि बॉलिवुड की नंबर 1 की कुर्सी में जो भी लोग बैठे हैं, वह उनसे ज्यादा काबिल नहीं हैं और अगर कोई यह कहता है कि वह बेहतर हैं तो उस बात से वह कतई सहमत नहीं हैं. मैंने थिअटर, सिनेमा, टीवी और स्टेज पर जो भी अपनी कलाकारी दिखा सकता था, उसे अब तक बेहत इमानदारी से निभाता आया हूं, लेकिन जो मैंने दिया उसके बदले में जो मुझे मिलना चाहिए था, जो मैं डिजर्व करता हूं, करता था, वह मुझे नहीं मिला है. शायद मेरे भाग्य में ही वह प्रसिद्धि नहीं लिखी है. शायद मेरा काम लोगों को पसंद नहीं आया, इसलिए जिस ऊंचाई पर मुझे पहुंचना था, वहां नहीं पहुंच सका. इस मामले में किसी को दोष देने की स्थिति में नहीं हूं. स्ट्रगल तो पहले भी था और आज भी है, जिंदगी का यह संघर्ष तो चिता में ही समाप्त होता है. हम जीवन भर सुखी होने के लिए संघर्ष करते रहते हैं. मैं जिस तरह का कलाकार हूं. सभी क्षेत्रों में मैंने खूब और बेहतरीन काम किया है, इसलिए मुझे यहां नहीं, बल्कि और भी ऊंचाइयों में पहुंचना था, नहीं पहुंचा हूं. अगर आपको यह लगता है कि बॉलिवुड में जो लोग आज सबसे ऊंची कुर्सी में बैठे हैं, वह मुझसे ज्यादा और विविध टैलंट वाले हैं तो मैं आपके ऐसे विचारों से कतई सहमत नहीं हूं.
