एन. टी. रामाराव या नन्दमूरि तारक रामाराव तेलुगु फ़िल्मों के प्रसिद्ध अभिनेता, निर्देशक और निर्माता थे। वे अभिनेता के साथ ही एक अच्छे राजनेता भी थे। एनटीआर के उपनाम से प्रसिद्ध रामाराव ने तेलुगु देशम पार्टी की स्थापना की और आंध्र प्रदेश के मुख्यमंत्री भी रहे।
राजनीति में आने से पहले वे तेलुगु फ़िल्मों के प्रसिद्ध अभिनेता थे। उन्होंने हिन्दू देवताओं जैसे कृष्ण और राम के जीवन से सम्बंधित बहुत-सी फ़िल्मों में काम किया और दर्शकों के चहेते बन गए। भारतीय सिनेमा में उनके योगदान को देखते हुए, वे भारत सरकार के द्वारा सन 1968 में पद्म श्री से सम्मानित किए गये।
एन.टी. रामा राव ने सन 1982 में तेलुगु देशम पार्टी की स्थापना कर राजनीति में प्रवेश किया। राजनीति में प्रवेश का मुख्य कारण था आंध्र प्रदेश को कांग्रेस के राज और आधिपत्य से मुक्ति दिलाना। राजनैतिक जीवन प्रारंभ करने के वक़्त एन.टी. रामा राव तेलुगु सिनेमा के सफल और लोकप्रिय अभिनेता थे। चुनावों में उनकी पार्टी को जबरदस्त सफलता मिली और 9 जनवरी 1983 को एन.टी. रामा राव दस कैबिनेट मंत्रिओं और पांच राज्य मंत्रिओं के साथ आंध्र-प्रदेश के दसवें मुख्यमंत्री बने। 1983 से 1994 के बीच वह तीन बार -प्रदेश के मुख्यमंत्री बने। अपने पहले कार्यकाल के दौरान एन.टी. रामा राव ने जन मानस को एकत्र करना शुरू किया और महिलाओं और समाज के अन्य पिछड़े वर्गों को मुख्य धारा में लाने का कार्य किया। अगस्त 1984 में आन्ध्र प्रदेश के राज्यपाल रामलाल ने उन्हें हटाकर भास्कर राव को मुख्यमंत्री बना दिया पर भारी विरोध प्रदर्शन के बाद प्रधानमंत्री ने राज्यपाल रामलाल को हटाकर शंकर दयाल शर्मा को नया राज्यपाल नियुक्त किया जिन्होंने रामा राव को सितम्बर 1984 में फिर से मुख्य मंत्री बनाया।
एन.टी. रामा राव इतने लोकप्रिय थे कि इन्दिरा गांधी की हत्या के बाद जब पूरे देश में कांग्रेस की लहर थी तब बस आंध्र-प्रदेश में कांग्रेस नहीं जीत पाई। इतना ही नहीं तेलुगु देशम लोक सभा में मुख्य विपक्षी दल भी बन गया। वर्ष 1989 के चुनाव में विरोधी लहर के कारण तेलुगु देशम पार्टी चुनाव हार गयी और कांग्रेस एक बार फिर सत्ता में वापस आ गयी। सन 1994 में एन.टी. रामा राव दोबारा सत्ता में लौटे। उनकी तेलुगु देशम पार्टी की 226 सीटों पर विजय हुई। इस बार एन.टी. रामा राव महज 9 महीने के लिए ही मुख्यमंत्री पद रह पाए क्योंकि उनके दामाद चंद्रबाबू नायडू ने पार्टी के अन्दर भीतरघात कर रामा राव को पार्टी अध्यक्ष और मुख्य मंत्री पद से हटा दिया।
एन. टी. रामाराव का जन्म 28 मई 1923 को मद्रास प्रेसीडेंसी के कृष्ण ज़िले के एक छोटे से ग्राम निम्माकुरु में हुआ था। उन्होंने अपनी प्रारंभिक शिक्षा गाँव के ही एक शिक्षक सुब्बाराव से ग्रहण की। उनके माता-पिता ने बचपन में ही उन्हें उनके मामा को गोद दे दिया था। गांव में अच्छी शिक्षा का प्रबंध नहीं था, इसलिए वे अपने गांव में महज पांचवीं कक्षा तक ही पढ़ाई कर पाए। इसके पश्चात् वह अपने दत्तक माता-पिता के साथ विजयवाड़ा चले गए जहाँ उन्होंने नगर निगम के विद्यालय में दाखिला लिया। उन्होंने सन 1940 में दसवीं की परीक्षा उत्तीर्ण की और उसके बाद आगे की पढ़ाई के लिए विजयवाड़ा के एस. आर. आर. और सी. वी. आर. कॉलेज में दाखिला लिया। उनके परिवार की आर्थिक स्थिति ठीक नहीं थी, इसलिए पढ़ाई के दौरान रामाराव अपने परिवार की मदद करने के लिए विजयवाड़ा के स्थानीय होटलों में दूध वितरण का कार्य करते थे। वर्ष 1945 में उन्होंने स्नातक की पढ़ाई के लिए आन्ध्र-क्रिश्चियन कॉलेज में दाखिला लिया। सन 1942 में उन्होंने अपने मामा की बेटी के साथ विवाह किया।
एन.टी. रामा राव ने अपने फिल्मी कॅरियर की शुरूआत मना देसम (1949) नामक तेलुगु फिल्म में पुलिस इंस्पेक्टर की भूमिका के साथ की। इसके बाद उन्होंने एक अंग्रेजी नाटक पिजारो पर आधारित और बी. ए. सुब्बाराव द्वारा निर्देशित फिल्म ‘पल्लेतुरी पिल्ला’ में अभिनय किया। इस फिल्म ने जबरदस्त सफलता हासिल की और रामाराव एक लोकप्रिय अभिनेता बन गए। अपनी पहली पौराणिक फिल्म ‘माया बाज़ार’ में उन्होंने हिन्दू देवता कृष्ण का चरित्र निभाया था। यह फिल्म भी बहुत कामयाब हुई जिसके बाद एन.टी. रामा राव ने अधिकांशत: हिंदू देवी-देवताओं और पौराणिक कथाओं पर आधारित फिल्में की। उन्होंने भगवान राम, कृष्ण, भीष्म, अर्जुन, कर्ण, दुर्योधन, विष्णु, शिव आदि के किरदार निभाए। उन्होंने 17 फिल्मों में कृष्ण का चरित्र निभाया था जिनमें प्रमुख हैं ‘श्री कृष्णार्जुन युधम’, ‘कर्णं’ और ‘दानवीर सूर कर्ण’।
