भारतीय में शिक्षा का आधार गुरूकुल परंपरा ही रहा है।गुरू का स्थान हमारे समाज में भगवान से भी आगे रखा गया है।इसी गुरूकुल परंपरा का एक जीता जागता उदाहरण है, भारत के शैक्षणिक दुनिया के मानस पर अंकित तक्षशिला विश्वविधालय ।तक्षशिला विश्वविधालय दुनिया का सबसे प्रथम विश्वविधालय माना जाता है।तक्षशिला विश्वविधालय ने सिर्फ भारत ही नहीं पूरी दुनिया में अपनी शिक्षा,शिक्षण और शिक्षक के बीच के तारतम्यता से जन्मी विभूतियों का इतिहास रचा है। आज भले ही तक्षशिला विश्वविधालय का भूगोल पाकिस्तान के रावलपिंडि के पास हो लेकिन तब यह समग्र भारत के शिक्षा केंद्रों में सबसे उन्नत था। तक्षशिला दुनिया की सबसे पुराने विश्वविधालय की पंक्ति में अग्रज रहा है।कहा जाता है कि तक्षशिला विश्वविधालय जिस गांधार जनपद में स्थित था उसे कभी भगवान राम के अनुज महाराज भरत के पुत्र तक्ष की भूमि का मान प्राप्त है।
छठवीं से सातवीं ईसा पूर्व में तैयार हुए,तक्षशिला विश्वविधालय में सिर्फ भारत ही नहीं दुनियाभर से विद्वान पढ़ने के लिए आया करते थें। जिनमें चीन, सीरिया, ग्रीस और बेबीलोनिया के शिक्षा प्रेमी भी शामिल थें।यहां 60 से भी अधिक विषयों को पढ़ाया जाता था। फिलहाल तक्षशिला विश्वविधालय पाकिस्तान के पंजाब प्रांत के रावलपिंडी जिले की एक तहसील है और इस्लामाबाद से लगभग 35 किलोमीटर दूर है। वैसे तो विश्वविद्यालय का जिक्र पौराणिक व्याख्याओं में भी मिलता है। कहा जाता है कि इसकी नींव श्रीराम के भाई भरत ने अपने पुत्र तक्ष के नाम पर की थी। बाद के समय में यहां कई सारे नई-पुराने राजाओं का शासन रहा।इसे गांधार नरेश का राजकीय संरक्षण मिला हुआ था और राजाओं के अलावा आम लोग भी यहां पढ़ने आते थे। गुरुकुल परंपरा पर आधारित इस विश्वविधालय में नियमित वेतनभोगी शिक्षक नहीं होते थें, बल्कि वे वहीं आवास करते और शिष्य बनाते थे।
500 ई. पू. में जब संसार में चिकित्सा शास्त्र की परंपरा भी नहीं थी, तब तक्षशिला ‘आयुर्वेद विज्ञान’ का सबसे बड़ा केन्द्र था। जातक कथाओं एवं विदेशी पर्यटकों ने अपने लेखों में भारतीय शल्यचिकित्सा का लोहा माना है।उनका मानना है कि यहां के स्नातक शल्य चिकित्सा में भी माहिर थे । मस्तिष्क के भीतर तथा अंतड़ियों तक की शल्यचिकित्सा बड़ी सुगमता से कर लेते थे। अनेक असाध्य रोगों के उपचार सरल एवं दुर्लभ जड़ी बूटियों के ज्ञान के आधार पर किया जाता था ।भारतीय दुर्लभ जड़ी –बूटियों का ज्ञान भारतीय ऋषि परंपरा से प्रसारित होता रहा है।शिष्य आचार्य के आश्रम में रहकर विद्याध्ययन करते थे।शिष्य –आचार्य का यह संबंध सिर्फ अध्ययन तक ही नहीं बल्कि जीवन के अन्य आयामों में भी शामिल था। एक आचार्य के पास अनेक विद्यार्थी रहते थे। इनकी संख्या प्राय: सौ से अधिक होती थी और अनेक बार 500 तक पहुंच जाती थी। अध्ययन में क्रियात्मक कार्य को बहुत महत्त्व दिया जाता था। छात्रों को देशाटन के माध्यम से विभिन्न संस्कृतियों और उनसे संबंध का अध्ययन हमारे तक्षशिला के गुरूकुल की अपनी परंपरा रहा है।
पाठयक्रमों में यहां वेद-वेदान्त, अष्टादश विद्याएं, दर्शन, व्याकरण, अर्थशास्त्र, राजनीति, युद्धविद्या, शस्त्र-संचालन, ज्योतिष, आयुर्वेद, ललित कला, हस्त विद्या, अश्व-विद्या, मन्त्र-विद्या, विविद्य भाषाएं, शिल्प आदि की शिक्षा विद्यार्थी प्राप्त करते थे। प्राचीन भारतीय साहित्य के अनुसार पाणिनी, कौटिल्य, चन्द्रगुप्त, जीवक, कौशलराज, प्रसेनजित आदि महापुरुषों ने इसी विश्वविद्यालय से शिक्षा प्राप्त की।तक्षशिला विश्वविधालय ने भारतीय इतिहास में चंद्रगुप्त जैसे महान योद्धा का सृजन ही नही किया बल्कि पूरे भारत वर्ष के एकस्वरूप बनाने में अपनी भूमिका निभाई।भारत के महान दार्शनिक और अध्येता आचार्य चाणक्य की भुमिका तो सर्वविदित है। भारतीय गुरू और शिष्य परंपरा से उपजी भारतीय शिक्षा के इस प्रवाह में जानते रहें अपने प्राचीन शिक्षा के मंदिरों के बारे में।
