SONPUR MELA: एशिया का सबसे बड़ा पशु मेला यानी कि बिहार का सोनपुर मेला। यह मेला आज का नहीं बल्कि हजारों साल पुराना है इसका इतिहास। सोनपुर मेला हर साल कार्तिक पूर्णिमार को शुरू होता है और एक माह तक चलता है। इसे लोग हरिहर मेला के नाम से भी जानते हैं। वहीं स्थानीय लोग इसे छत्तर मेला कह कर पुकारते आए हैं। पटना से लगभग 25 किलोमीटर दूर हाजीपुर के सोनपुर इलाके में लगता है यह मेला। सोनपुर में गंडक नदी के किनारों ने इस मेले को पूरी दुनिया में एक अलग पहचान दी है।
एक समय था जब इस पशु मेले में सिर्फ भारत से ही नहीं बल्कि एशिया भर से व्यापारी और खरीदार यहां आते थे। इसलिए अब भी यह एशिया का सबसे बड़ा पशु मेला माना जाता है। एक जमाने में यहाँ के बाजारों में हाथी तक आते थे । जिसका खरीदार कोई आम लोग नहीं बल्कि स्वयं मौर्य साम्राज्य था। जी हां मौर्य साम्राज्य भी यहीं से अपने लिए हाथी की खरीदारी करता था। क्योंकि उस वक्त की सेना में काफी डिमांड थी हाथी की। सोनपुर मेला का एक और चीज बहुत ज्यादा नामी है और वह है यहां की नौटंकी यानी कि क्षेत्रीय ड्रामा। इस मेले से चन्द्रगुप्त मौर्य से लेकर अकबर और कुवंर सिंह तक के लिए पशु हाथी और घोड़े खरीदे जाते थे।
आज क्या हालत है इस मेले की
वैसे तो सोनपुर मेला आज भी एशिया का सबसे बड़ा पशु मेला है लेकिन आज यहां के बाजार में पशुओं को लेकर ना तो वह आकर्षण है ना ही जज्बा। पहले के जमाने में सोनपुर मेले में हाथियों का बहुत बड़ा बाजार लगता था। लोग दूर दूर से इसे देखने आते थे। साधारण से लेकर खास तक के लिए पशुओं की खरीदारी यहीं से होती थी। उस समय में इस बाजार में ईरान से घोड़े लाये जाते थे बेचने के लिए। लेकिन आज इस बाजार में हाथी का क्रय विक्रय बंद है। सरकार ने इसे प्रतिबंधित कर रखा है। इसके साथ ही ईरान से घोड़े भी ना के बराबर ही आते हैं। ना तो वैसा खरीदार बचा है ना इनका बाजार। तकनीक की बढ़त ने हमारे जीवन से पशुओं की अहमियत को काफी कम कर दिया है। आज का बाजार पशुओं की उपयोगिता के अनुसार बस नाममात्र का रह गया है।
