“हाथ कंगन को आरसी क्या, पढ़े लिखे को फ़ारसी क्या” वाली कहावत भी है जिसकी दोनों पंक्तियों की आपसी रिश्तेदारी उलझन भरी है। यह जानना ज़रूरी है कि इस कहावत के दो पद हैं। पहला पद है “हाथ कंगन को आरसी क्या” दूसरा पद है “पढ़े लिखे को फ़ारसी क्या”। इन दोनों पदों की भाषा का गठन आधुनिक हिन्दी है। अगर आरसी शब्द को छोड़ दें तो कहावत का एक भी शब्द ऐसा नहीं है जिसे समझने में मुश्किल हो। आरसी यानी आईना, मिरर, शीशा। हिन्दी में अब आरसी शब्द का प्रचलन नहीं रहा अलबत्ता मराठी में इसका रूप आरसा होता है और यह खूब प्रचलित है। तो “हाथ कंगन को आरसी क्या” वाला पूर्वपद अपने आप में पूरी कहावत है।
मूलतः यह प्राकृत-संस्कृत परम्परा की उक्ति है और फ़ारसी के उत्कर्ष काल से भी सदियों पहले यह कहावत प्रचलित थी। इसका प्राकृत रूप देखिए- “हत्थकंकणं किं दप्पणेण पेक्खि अदि”। इसी बात को संस्कृत में इस तरह कहा गया है- “हस्ते कंकणं किं दर्पणेन”। यह नहीं कहा जा सकता कि संस्कृत उक्ति के आधार पर प्राकृत रूप बना या प्राकृत उक्ति के आधार पर संस्कृत उक्ति गढ़ी गई। कहावतें सार्वजनीन सत्य की अभिव्यक्ति का आसान ज़रिया होती हैं इसलिए वही कहावत जनमानस में पैठ बनाती हैं जो लोकभाषा में होती हैं। इस सन्दर्भ में आठवीं-नवीं सदी के ख्यात संस्कृत साहित्यकार राजशेखर के प्रसिद्ध प्राकृत नाट्य ‘कर्पूरमंजरी’ में “हत्थकंकणं किं दप्पणेण पेक्खि अदि” का उल्लेख मिलता है।
इस कहावत के दूसरे पद को समझने के लिए इसकी बुनियाद समझना ज़रूरी है। मुस्लिम काल की राजभाषा फ़ारसी थी। जिस तरह ब्रिटिश राज में अंग्रेजी जानने वाले की मौज थी और तत्काल नौकरी मिल जाती थी उसी तरह मुस्लिम काल में फ़ारसी का बोलबाला था। हिन्दू लोग फ़ारसी नहीं सीखते थे क्योंकि यवनों, म्लेच्छों की भाषा थी। हिन्दुओं के कायस्थ तबके में विद्या का वही महत्व था जैसा बनियों में धनसंग्रह का। कायस्थों का विद्याव्यवसन नवाचारी था। नई-नई भाषाओं के ज़रिये और ज्ञान का क्षेत्र और व्यापक हो सकता है यह बात उनकी व्यावहारिक सोच को ज़ाहिर करती है। उन्होंने अरबी भी सीखी और फ़ारसी भी। नवाबों के मीरमुंशी ज्यादातर कायस्थ ही होते थे। रायज़ादा, कानूनगो, मुंशी, बहादुर यहाँ तक की नवाब जैसी उपाधियाँ इन्हें मिलती थी और बड़़ी बड़ी जागीरें भी। वे अपने बड़े अधिकारियों को हमेशा अपनी विद्वता का एहसास कराते और बदले में लाभ कमाते थे।
इस पृष्ठभूमि में देखें कि हिन्दुस्तान में फ़ारसी का दौर बारहवी-तेरहवीं सदी से शुरू होता है। “हाथ कंगन को आरसी क्या, पढ़े लिखे को फ़ारसी क्या” इस पूरी कहावत का गढ़न आज की हिन्दी का लगता है। हिन्दी में प्रचलित अनेक प्राचीन कहावतें सीधे-सीधे फ़ारसी समेत अवधी, बृज, बुंदेली, राजस्थानी व अन्य देसी भाषाओं से आती है। लेकिन यह भी सच है कि बारहवीं सदी से ही हिन्दी ने वह रूप लेना शुरू कर दिया था जिसकी बुनियाद पर आज की हिंदी खड़ी है। चौदहवीं –पन्द्रहवीं सदी की हिन्दी के अनेक प्रमाण उपलब्ध है जो आज की हिन्दी से मेल खाते हैं। मुमकिन है कि “हत्थकंकणं किं दप्पणेण पेक्खि अदि” खुसरो काल तक आते-आते इस रूप में ढल गई हो। पर यह तय है कि उस वक्त तक भी समूची कहावत का पहला पद ही प्रचलित रहा होगा।
