किसी भी राष्ट्र की पहचान उसकी भाषा और संस्कृति से होती है. 14 सितंबर 1949 को संविधान सभा ने एक मत से निर्णय लिया कि हिंदी ही भारत की राजभाषा होगी. देश के पहले प्रधानमंत्री जवाहरलाल नेहरू ने कहा कि इस दिन के महत्व देखते हुए हर साल 14 सितंबर को हिंदी दिवस मनाया जाए. बता दें कि पहला हिंदी दिवस 14 सितंबर 1953 में मनाया गया था.
हिंदी दिवस एक ऐसा अवसर है, जो बताता है कि भारत की भाषा कितनी समृद्ध है और यह भारत को एक सूत्र में बांधे रखने का माध्यम भी हैं . भारतीय संपर्क भाषा के रूप में हिंदी को ही स्वीकार करते हैं. हिंदी को अपनी प्रथम भाषा के रूप में स्वीकारते भी हैं, जिस कारण हिंदी विश्व में सबसे अधिक बोली जाने वाली भाषाओं में से एक है.
हिंदी भारत के अलावा नेपाल, गुयाना, त्रिनिदाद और मॉरिशस में बहुत ज्यादा बोली जाती हैं. यह भारतीय भाषा की मानकीकृत रूप हैं, जिसमें संस्कृत के तत्सम तथा तत्भव शब्दों का प्रयोग हैं. चीनी के बाद सर्वाधिक बोली जाने वाली भाषा हिंदी ही हैं. वैश्विक स्तर पर हिंदी का मान बढ़ता दिखाई दे रहा हैं, जिसमें एक कड़ी फरवरी 2019 में अबुधाबी में हिंदी को न्यायालय की तीसरी भाषा के रूप में मान्यता मिलने से जुडी है .
हिंदी भाषा के लोकप्रियता को इस आधार पर भी समझा जा सकता है कि अब विश्व स्तर की कंपनियां ऐसे फोन बना रही है, जो हिंदी और भारतीय भाषाओं को सपोर्ट करती हैं. बहुराष्ट्रीय कंपनियां हिंदी भाषी लोगों को वरीयता दे रही हैं . हॉलीवुड की फिल्में हिंदी में भी डब हो रही हैं और हिंदी फिल्में देश के बाहर भी अच्छी कमाई कर ले रही हैं.
इतना ही नहीं, हिंदी विज्ञापन उद्योग की पसंदीदा भाषा बन रही हैं. सोशल मीडिया ने हिंदी लेखन, पत्रकारिता के नए युग का सूत्रपात किया है. कई जन आंदोलन और चुनाव जीतने और हारने में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका हिंदी की रही हैं. सयुक्त राष्ट्र ने हिंदी रेडियो का प्रसारण शुरू किया है. हिंदी को संयुक्त राष्ट्र संघ की भाषा बनाए जाने के लिए भारत सरकार प्रयत्नशील है.
