प्रकृति ने मनुष्य को स्वस्थ रहने के लिए कुछ ऐसा प्राकृतिक पदार्थ दिए हैं, जिनसे आप आजीवन निरोग रह सकते हैं. उसी श्रेणी का एक फल है – आंवला. संस्कृत में इसे अमृता, अमृतफल, आमलकी, पंचरसा इत्यादि कहते हैं. अंग्रेजी में इसे एंब्लिक माइरीबालन या इण्डियन गूजबेरी और लैटिन में फिलैंथस एंबेलिका कहा जाता है. आंवला एक ऐसा फल है, जो अपने औषधीय गुणों के कारण काफी प्रसिद्ध है. जानकारों का कहना है कि इसे हर किसी को अपनी भोजन में शामिल करना चाहिए, क्योंकि यह विटामिन सी, कैल्शियम, फॉस्फोरस, पोटैशिम, आयरन, कैरोटीन और विटामिन बी कॉम्पलेक्स का बहुत बड़ा स्रोत है. शायद यही वजह है कि आंवले को 100 रोगों की एक दवा माना जाता है और आंवले की तुलना अमृत से की जाती है. अगर आप भी अपने अंदर कई पोषक तत्वों या एंटी-ऑक्सीडेंट की कमी को पूरा करना चाहते हैं, तो रोज एक आंवला जरूर खाएं. यह न केवल शरीर के एक हिस्से को बल्कि पूरे शरीर को अंदर तक स्वस्थ रखता है.
आयुर्वेद के अनुसार, हरीतकी (हड़) और आंवला दो सर्वोत्कृष्ट औषधियां हैं. इन दोनों में आंवले का महत्व अधिक है. चरक संहिता के अनुसार, शारीरिक दुर्बलता को रोकने वाले द्रव्यों में आंवला सबसे प्रधान है. प्राचीन ग्रंथकारों ने इसको शिवा (कल्याणकारी), वयस्था (अवस्था को बनाए रखनेवाला) तथा धात्री (माता के समान रक्षा करनेवाला) कहा है. इसका वृक्ष पूरे भारत में जंगलों तथा बाग-बगीचों में होता है. आंवला एक मध्यम कद का पेड़ है, जिस की ऊंचाई 20-30 फुट तक होती है. इस की टहनियां मुलायम होती हैं पेड़ का हर हिस्सा फल, लकड़ी, पत्ती, छाल वगैरह कई कामों में इस्तेमाल होता है. कृषि बागवानी तकनीक में आंवला बहुत फायदेमंद फसल है. छाल राख के रंग की, पत्ते इमली के पत्तों जैसे, किंतु कुछ बड़े तथा फूल पीले रंग के छोटे-छोटे होते हैं. फूलों के स्थान पर गोल, चमकते हुए, पकने पर लाल रंग के, फल लगते हैं, जो आंवला नाम से ही जाने जाते हैं. वाराणसी का आंवला सब से अच्छा माना जाता है. यह वृक्ष कार्तिक में फलता है.
आंवले के पेड़ में फरवरी से मई के दौरान फूल लगते हैं, जो आगे चल कर अक्टूबर से अप्रैल तक फल बनाते हैं. इसके पुष्प हरे-पीले रंग के बहुत छोटे गुच्छों में लगते हैं तथा घंटे की तरह होते हैं. इसके फल सामान्य रूप से छोटे होते हैं, लेकिन प्रसंस्कृत पौधे में थोड़े बड़े फल लगते हैं. पके फलों का रंग लालिमायुक्त होता है. खरबूजे की तरह फल पर 6 रेखाएं 6 खंडों का प्रतीक होती हैं. फल की गुठली में 6 कोष (षट्कोषीय बीज) होते हैं, छोटे आंवलों में गूदा कम, रेशेदार और गुठली बड़ी होती है. मोटेतौर पर औषधीय प्रयोग के लिए छोटे आंवले ही अधिक उपयुक्त होते हैं. स्वाद में इनके फल कसाय होते हैं.
