चंदन की लकड़ी भारतीय परंपराओं की एक महत्वपूर्ण अंग है. आदि काल से इसका प्रयोग पूजा, हवन, कर्मकांड में बहुत किया जाता है. भारतीय परंपरा में कोई भी पूजा और हवन बिना चंदन की लकड़ी के पूर्ण नहीं होता. कर्म दैवीय हो या पितृ, चंदन की लकड़ी अनिवार्य होती है. काफी समय तक चंदन का पौधा भारत का मूलवासी माना गया, लेकिन अब वैज्ञानिकों के अनुसार चंदन इंडोनेशिया का मूलवासी है. वहां पर तीन प्रकार की प्रजातियां पाई जाती हैं. इसकी बीस जातियां और भी होती हैं, मगर भारत में पाई जाने वाली चंदन जाति ही सर्वश्रेष्ठ है और व्यापारिक दृष्टि से सर्वाधिक महत्त्वपूर्ण भी है. इसी प्रकार पेसिफिक चंदन ऑस्ट्रेलिया और न्यूजीलैंड में पैदा होता है. चीन, मलेशिया और इंडोनेशिया में भी चंदन पाया जाता है.
चंदन चार प्रकार का माना जाता है. सफेद, लाल, मयूर और नाग चंदन. मलयालम, संस्कृत और हिंदी भाषा में इसे चंदन कहते हैं. कन्नड़ में श्रीगंधा और गुजराती में सुकेत. वनस्पति शास्त्री इसे सेंटलम अल्यम कहते हैं, जो सेंटलेसी परिवार का सदस्य है. कहा जाता है कि चंदन के वन में कोई सुगंध या खुशबू नहीं आती है. चंदन के हरे पेड़ में खुशबू नहीं होती है. वास्तव में चंदन के पेड़ की पक्की लकड़ी, जिसे हीरा कहा जाता है, में ही खुशबू होती है. इसी लकड़ी का प्रयोग विभिन्न कार्यों के लिए किया जाता है. चंदन के पेड़ में साल में दो बार नई कोपलें, फल और फूल आते हंै. बरसात के पहले और बरसात के बाद चंदन के पेड़ फलों और फूलों से लदकर पूरे वन को एक नई आभा से युक्त कर देते हैं.
मान्यता है कि भगवान को चंदन का तिलक लगाने से, सुख, शांति और समृद्ध मिलती है। शिव और विष्णु को चंदन का तिलक अत्यंत प्रिय है. हमारे यहां पूजा पाठ के अलावा चंदन का सबसे ज्यादा प्रयोग सौंदर्य प्रसाधन में होता है. इससे तेल, पावडर और विभिन्न प्रकार के इत्र बनाए जाते हैं. चंदन एन्टीबोयोटिक और एन्टी सेप्टिक दोनों के काम आता हैं. आयुर्वेद में भी चंदन को एक गुणकारी औषधि के रूप में माना जाता हैं. ये शीतल और शक्तिवर्धक माना गया है. इसका प्रयोग शरबत बनाने में किया जाता हैं.
भारत के दक्षिण भाग में सबसे ज्यादा खास तौर पर कर्नाटक का चंदन सबसे ज्यादा प्रसिद्ध हैं. चंदन की लकड़ी का प्रयोग घर की साज-सज्जा में भी किया जाता है. चंदन को ज्योतिष शास्त्र में वास्तुदोष निवारक माना जाता है. जहां भी चंदन के पेड़ होते हैं, वहां के घरों में वास्तुदोष नहीं होता है. इस प्रकार चंदन सर्वगुण संपन्न है, जिनसे हमारी सारी जरूरतें पूरी होती हैं.
