जिस तरह हिंदुओं के लिए अमरनाथ जी और मुस्लिमों के लिए काबा पवित्र है उसी तरह सिखों के लिए स्वर्ण मंदिर महत्त्व रखता है. सिक्खों के लिए स्वर्ण मंदिर बहुत ही महत्वपूर्ण है, और सबसे पवित्र मंदिर माना जाता है. पंजाबियों में एक प्रचिलत धार्मिक कहावत है, सत अबगत, सत मतलब सत्य. सत्य से साक्षात्कार. इसलिए इसे सत तीरथ कहा जाता है. जहां आकर हमें सत्य का साक्षात्कार होता है.
सिखों के पांचवें गुरु अर्जुनदेव जी ने स्वर्ण मंदिर (श्री हरिमंदिर साहिब) का निर्माण कार्य पंजाब के अमृतसर में शुरू कराया था. यह मंदिर सिक्ख धर्म की सहनशीलता तथा स्वीकार्यता का संदेश अपनी वास्तुकला के माध्यम से प्रदर्शित करता है, जिसमें अन्य धर्मों के संकेत भी शामिल किए गए हैं. दुनिया भर के सिक्ख अमृतसर आना चाहते हैं और श्री हरमंदिर साहिब में अपनी अरदास देकर अपनी श्रद्धा व्यक्त करना चाहते हैं.
यूं तो स्वर्ण मंदिर में किसी भी जाति, धर्म के लोग जा सकते हैं लेकिन स्वर्ण मंदिर में प्रवेश करते समय कुछ बुनियादी नियमों का अवश्य पालन करना होता है. मंदिर परिसर में जाने से पहले जूते बाहर निकालने होते हैं. मंदिर के अंदर धूम्रपान, मदिरा पान आदि पूर्णतरू निषेध हैं. मंदिर के अंदर जाते समय सर ढंका होना चाहिए. मंदिर परिसर द्वारा सर ढंकने के लिए विशेष रूप से कपड़े या स्कार्फ प्रदान किए जाते हैं. सर ढकना आदर प्रकट करने का एक तरीका है.गुरुवाणी सुनने के लिए आपको दरबार साहिब के अंदर जमीन पर ही बैठना चाहिए.
कहा जाता है कि हरिमंदिर साहिब का सपना तीसरे सिख गुरु अमर दास जी का था. लेकिन इसका मुख्य कार्य पांचवें सिख गुरु अर्जुनदेव जी ने शुरू कराया था. स्वर्ण मंदिर को धार्मिक एकता का भी स्वरूप माना जाता है. एक सिख तीर्थ होने के बावजूद हरिमंदिर साहिब जी यानि स्वर्ण मंदिर की नींव सूफी संत मियां मीर जी द्वारा रखी गई है. स्वर्ण मंदिर की वास्तु कला हिन्दू तथा मुस्लिम निर्माण कार्य के बीच एक अनोखे सौहार्द को प्रदर्शित करती है तथा स्वर्ण मंदिर को विश्वास के सर्वोत्तम वास्तु-कलात्मकौ नमूने के रूप में माना जा सकता है. यह कई बार कहा जाता है कि इस वास्तुकला से भारत के कला इतिहास में सिक्ख संप्रदाय की एक स्वतंत्र वास्तुकला का सृजन हुआ है. यह मंदिर कलात्मक सौंदर्य और गहरी शांति का उल्लेखनीय संयोजन है.
बता दें कि गुरु अर्जुन साहिब, पांचवें नानक, ने सिक्खों की पूजा के एक केन्द्रीय स्थल के सृजन की कल्पना की और उन्होंने स्वयं श्री हरमंदिर साहिब की वास्तुकला की संरचना की. पहले इसमें एक पवित्र तालाब (अमृतसर या अमृत सरोवर) बनाने की योजना गुरु अमरदास साहिब द्वारा बनाई गई थी, जो तीसरे नानक कहे जाते हैं किन्तु गुरु रामदास साहिब ने इसे बाबा बुद्ध जी के पर्यवेक्षण में निष्पादित किया. इस स्थल की भूमि मूल गांवों के जमींदारों से मुफ्त या भुगतान के आधार पर पूर्व गुरु साहिबों द्वारा अर्जित की गई थी. यहाँ एक कस्बा स्थापित करने की योजना भी बनाई गई थी. अत: सरोवर पर निर्माण कार्य के साथ कस्बों का निर्माण भी इसी के साथ 1570 ई. में शुरू हुआ. दोनों परियोजनाओं का कार्य 1577 ई. में पूरा हुआ था। स्वर्ण मंदिर का निर्माण कार्य सितंबर 1604 में पूरा हुआ. गुरु अर्जन साहिब ने नव सृजित गुरु ग्रंथ साहिब (सिक्ख धर्म की पवित्र पुस्तक) की स्थापना श्री हरमंदिर साहिब में की तथा बाबा बुद्ध जी को इसका प्रथम ग्रंथी अर्थात गुरु ग्रंथ साहिब का वाचक नियुक्त किया.
इतिहास के अनुसार, बात करें तो हमें पता चलता है कि सन 1589 ने गुरु अर्जुन देव के एक शिष्य शेखमियां मीर ने सरोवर के बीच में स्थित वर्तमान स्वर्ण-मन्दिर की नींव डाली. मन्दिर के चारों ओर चार दरवाज़ों का प्रबन्ध किया गया था. यह गुरु नानक के उदार धार्मिक विचारों का प्रतीक समझा गया. मन्दिर में गुरु-ग्रंथ-साहिब की, जिसका संग्रह गुरु अर्जुन देव ने किया था, स्थापना की गई थी. सरोवर को गहरा करवाने और परिवर्धित करने का कार्य बाबू बूढ़ा नामक व्यक्ति को सौंपा गया था और इन्हें ही ग्रंथ-साहब का प्रथम ग्रंथी बनाया गया. 1757 ई. में वीर सरदार बाबा दीपसिंह जी ने मुगलों के अधिकार से इस मन्दिर को छुड़ाया, किन्तु वे उनके साथ लड़ते हुए वीरगति को प्राप्त हुए. उनकी दुधारी तलवार मन्दिर के संग्रहालय में सुरक्षित है. स्वर्ण-मन्दिर के निकट बाबा अटलराय का गुरुद्वारा है. ये छठे गुरु हरगोविन्द के पुत्र थे, और नौ वर्ष की आयु में ही सन्त समझे जाने लगे थे. उन्होंने इतनी छोटी-सी उम्र में एक मृत शिष्य को जीवन दान देने में अपने प्राण दे दिए थे. कहा जाता है, कि गुरुद्वारे की नौं मन्ज़िलें इस बालक की आयु की प्रतीक हैं. पंजाब-केसरी महाराज रणजीत सिंह ने स्वर्ण-मन्दिर को एक बहुमूल्य पटमण्डप दान में दिया था, जो संग्रहालय में है|
