भारतीय कला अपनी प्राचीनता तथा विवधता के लिए विख्यात रही है। आज जिस रूप में ‘कला’ शब्द अत्यन्त व्यापक और बहुअर्थी हो गया है, प्राचीन काल में उसका एक छोटा हिस्सा भी न था। यदि ऐतिहासिक काल को छोड़ और पीछे प्रागैतिहासिक काल पर दृष्टि डाली जाए तो विभिन्न नदियों की घाटियों में पुरातत्त्वविदों को खुदाई में मिले असंख्य पाषाण उपकरण भारत के आदि मनुष्यों की कलात्मक प्रवृत्तियों के साक्षात प्रमाण हैं। पत्थर के टुकड़े को विभिन्न तकनीकों से विभिन्न प्रयोजनों के अनुरूप स्वरूप प्रदान किया जाता था।
ऐतिहासिक काल में भारतीय कला में और भी परिपक्वता आई। मौर्य काल, कुषाण काल और फिर गुप्त काल में भारतीय कला निरन्तर प्रगति करती गई। अशोक के विभिन्न शिलालेख, स्तम्भलेख और स्तम्भ कलात्मक दृष्टि से अत्यन्त महत्त्वपूर्ण हैं। सारनाथ स्थित अशोक स्तम्भ और उसके चार सिंह व धर्म चक्र युक्त शीर्ष भारतीय कला का उत्कृष्ट नमूना है। कुषाण काल में विकसित गांधार और मथुरा कलाओं की श्रेष्ठता जगज़ाहिर है। गुप्त काल सिर्फ़ राजनीतिक और आर्थिक दृष्टि से ही सम्पन्न नहीं था, कलात्मक दृष्टि से भी वह अत्यन्त सम्पन्न था। तभी तो इतिहासकारों ने उसे प्राचीन भारतीय इतिहास का ‘स्वर्ण युग’ कहा है।
विद्वानों का मानना है कि भारतीय कला धर्म से प्रेरित हुई। वैसे इस बारे में कुछ नकारने जैसा भी नहीं है। हो सकता है, कलाकारों और हस्तशिल्पियों ने धर्माचार्यों के निर्देशानुसार काम किया हो, पर स्वयं क अभिव्यक्त करते समय उन्होंने संसार को जैसा देखा, वैसा ही दिखाया। यह सही है कि भारतीय कला के माध्यम से जो पावन दृष्टि को ही अभिव्यक्त किया गया, जो भौतिक संसार के पीछे छिपे दैव तत्वों से, जीवन और प्रकृति की सनातन विषमता और सबसे ऊपर मानवीय तत्व से हमेशा अवगत रहती है।
पूर्व मध्ययुग में निर्मित विशालकाय मन्दिर, क़िले तथा मूर्तियाँ तथा उत्तर मध्ययुग के इस्लामिक तथा भारतीय कला के संगम से युक्त अनेक भवन, चित्र तथा अन्य कलात्मक वस्तुएँ भारतीय कला की अमूल्य धरोहर हैं। आधुनिक युग में भारतीय कला पर पाश्चात्य कला का प्रभाव पड़ा। उसकी विषय वस्तु, प्रस्तुतीकरण के तरीक़े तथा भावाभिव्यक्ति में विविधता एवं जटिलता आई। आधुनिक कला अपने कलात्मक पक्ष के साथ-साथ उपयोगिता पक्ष को भी साथ लेकर चल रही है।
साहित्य के साथ-साथ कुछ विदेशी यात्रियों के विवरण भी वास्तुकला के साधन है । मेगस्थनीज के विवरण से पाटलिपुत्र के नगर विन्यास के विषय में कुछ जानकारी होती है । तदनुसार यह 80 स्टेडिया (16 किलोमीटर) लम्बा तथा 15 स्टेडिया (तीन किलोमीटर) चौड़ा था । इसके चारों ओर 185 मीटर चौड़ी तथा तीस हाथ गहरी खाई थी । ह्वेनसांग तथा इत्सिंग जैसे यात्रियों के विवरण से मौर्यकालीन स्तम्भ एवं स्तूपों की जानकारी मिलती है । टेनसांग अशोक द्वारा स्थापित पन्द्रह स्तम्भों का उल्लेख करता है जो साकाश्य, श्रावस्ती, कपिलवस्तु, लुम्बिनी, कुशीनगर, सारनाथ, वैशाली, पाटलिपुत्र, राजगृह में विद्यमान थे ।
वह यह भी सूचित करता है कि तक्षशिला, श्रीनगर, थानेश्वर, मथुरा, कन्नोज, प्रयाग, कौशाम्बी, श्रावस्ती, वाराणसी, सारनाथ, वैशाली, गया, कपिलवस्तु आदि में अशोक द्वारा स्तूपों का निर्माण करवाया गया था । ह्वेनसांग के कुछ समय बाद आने वाले चीनी यात्री इत्सिंग ने भी स्तूप निर्माण की परम्परा का उल्लेख किया है ।
उसके अनुसार पूजार्थक का निर्माण भिक्षु तथा उपासक दोनों ही करते थे क्योंकि लोगों में ऐसा विश्वास था कि यह कार्य अनन्त पुण्यदायक है। पूर्वमध्यकाल के मुस्लिम लेखकों के विवरण से भी कुछ प्राचीन नगरों के विन्यास के विषय में जानकारी मिलती है। अल्वरूनी तथा उत्बी के विवरण से पता चलता है कि कन्नोज नगर अत्यन्त विस्तृत एवं भव्य था।
कला लोगों की संस्कृति में एक मूल्यवान विरासत है। जब कोई कला की बात करता है तो आमतौर पर उसका अभिप्राय दृष्टिमूलक कला से होता है। जैसे वास्तुकला, मूर्तिकला तथा चित्रकला। अतीत में ये तीनों पहलू आपस में मिले हुए थे। वास्तुकला में ही मूर्तिकला एवं चित्रकला का समावेश था।जीवन के दैनिक क्रिया-कलापों के बीच उसके पूजा-पाठ, उत्सव, पर्व-त्योहार, शादी-विवाह या अन्य घटनाओं से विविध कलाओं का घनिष्ट सम्बन्ध है। इसीलिए भारत की चर्चा तब तक अपूर्ण मानी जाएगी, जब तक की उसके कला पक्ष को शामिल न किया जाय। प्राचीन भारतीय ग्रन्थों में 64 कलाओं का उल्लेख मिलता है, जिनका ज्ञान प्रत्येक सुसंस्कृत नागरिक के लिए अनिवार्य समझा जाता था। इसीलिए भर्तृहरि ने तो यहाँ तक कह डाला ‘साहित्य, संगीत, कला विहीनः साक्षात् पशुः पुच्छविषाणहीनः।’ अर्थात् साहित्य, संगीत और कला से विहीन व्यक्ति पशु के समान है।
