पुराणों, संस्कृत साहित्य के ग्रंथों, स्तोत्रों आदि में तांबूल के वर्णन भरे पड़े हैं. शाक्त तंत्रों (संगमतंत्र-कालीखंड) में इसे सिद्धिप्राप्ति का सहायक ही नहीं कहा है. साथ ही यह भी कहा गया है कि जप में तांबूल-चर्वण और दीक्षा में गुरु को समर्पण किए बिना सिद्धि अप्राप्त रहती है. उसे यश, धर्म, ऐश्वर्य, श्रीवैराग्य और मुक्ति का भी साधक कहा है. इसके अलावा, पांचवीं शती के बाद वाले कई अभिलेखों में भी इसका प्रचुर उल्लेख है. हिंदी की रीतिकालीन कविता में भी तांबूल की बड़ी प्रशंसा मिलती है – सौंदर्यवर्धक और शोभाकारक रूप में भी और मादक, उद्दीपक रूप में भी.
पान के औषधीय गुणों का वर्णन चरक संहिता में भी किया गया है. ग्रामीण अंचलों में पान के पत्तों का प्रयोग लोग फोड़े-फुंसी उपचार में पुल्टिस के रूप में करते हैं. हितोपदेश के अनुसार, पान के औषधीय गुण हैं बलगम हटाना, मुख शुद्धि, अपच, श्वांस संबंधी बीमारियों का निदान. पान के पत्ते में डाएस्टेस नाम का एंजाइम होता है, जो स्टार्च को पचाने में मदद करता है. हम भारतीयों का खाना काफी स्टार्च युक्त होता है. जैसे चावल, आलू आदि. पान में इस्तेमाल होने वाला कत्था एक एंटिसेप्टिक होता है, जो दांत की बीमारियों को दूर रखता है. विश्व प्रसिद्ध हेल्थ मैग्जीन लैंसेट का कहना है कि चूना भी एंटीसेप्टिक होता है और इसमें मौजूद कैल्शियम की वजह से यह हड्डियों और प्रेग्नेंसी में फायदेमंद होता है.
ऐसा लोक मत है कि पान खाने से मुख शुद्ध होता है. साथ ही शरीर में स्फूर्ति बनी रहती है. भारत में पान की खेती लगभग 50,000 हेक्टेयर में की जाती है. इसके अतिरिक्त पान की खेती बांग्लादेश, श्रीलंका, मलेशिया, सिंगापुर,थाईलैण्ड, फिलीपिंस, पापुआ, न्यूगिनी आदि में भी सफलतापूर्वक की जाती है.
