महाशय धर्मपाल : खुद ही लिखी किस्मत

वर्ष 2019 में जिन लोगों को पद्म पुरस्कार दिया गया, उसमें सबसे बुजुर्ग रहे दिल्ली के महाशय धर्मपाल गुलाटी. महाशय धर्मपाल गुलाटी जी आज किसी परिचय के मोहताज़ नहीं. धर्मपाल गुलाटी भारत के एक उद्यमी तथा समाजसेवी हैं. एम डी एच (महाशिया दी हट्टी) मसाले उनके ही उत्पाद हैं. भारत-पाकिस्तान बटवारे के बाद भारत आकर इन्होंने दिल्ली में करोल बाग से अपना व्यापार प्रारंभ किया. अब यह भारत की एक जानी मानी मसाला कंपनी एम डी एच को चलाते हैं. एम डी एच मसाले के निर्माता न सिर्फ भारत में बल्कि पूरी दुनिया में अपनी शुद्धता और स्वाद के लिए प्रसिद्ध हैं, लेकिन क्या आपको मालूम है कि उनका यहाँ तक पहुंचने का सफ़र कितना चुनौतीपूर्ण रहा.
महाशय जी का जन्म सियालकोट (जो कि अब पाकिस्तान का हिस्सा है) में 27 मार्च 1923 को एक बेहद सामान्य परिवार में हुआ था. उनके पिता का नाम महाशय चुन्नीलाल और माता का नाम चनन देवी था, जिनके नाम पर दिल्ली के जनकपुरी इलाके में माता चनन देवी अस्पताल भी है. बचपन से ही इनको पढ़ने का शौक नहीं था, लेकिन इनके पिताजी की इच्छा थी कि ये खूब पढ़ें-लिखे.
महाशय जी के पिता उन्हें बहुत समझाते थे, लेकिन फिर भी महाशय जी का ध्यान पढ़ाई में कभी नहीं लगा. जैसे-तैसे इन्होंने चौथी कक्षा तो पास कर ली लेकिन पांचवी कक्षा में फेल हो गये, इसके बाद से महाशय जी ने स्कूल जाना ही छोड़ दिया. पिताजी ने इन्हें एक बढ़ई की दुकान में लगवा दिया जिससे कि ये कुछ काम सीख सकें लेकिन कुछ दिन बाद काम में मन न लगने की वजह से महाशय जी ने काम छोड़ दिया. धीरे-धीरे बहुत सारे काम करते-छोड़ते वो 15 वर्ष के हो चुके थे अब तक वो करीब 50 काम छोड़ चुके थे. उन दिनों सियालकोट लाल मिर्च के लिए बहुत प्रसिद्द हुआ करता था. तो इसी वजह से पिताजी ने इनके लिए एक मसाले की दुकान खुलवा दी. धीरे-धीरे धंधा अच्छा चलने लगा था। उन दिनों सबसे ज्यादा चिंता का विषय था आज़ादी की लड़ाई. आज़ादी की लड़ाई उन दिनों चरम पर थी, कुछ भी कभी भी हो सकता था.
1947 में आज़ादी के बाद जब भारत आज़ाद हुआ तब सियालकोट पाकिस्तान का हिस्सा बन गया. पाकिस्तान में हिन्दुओं की हालत बद-से बद्तर हो रही थी, तो महाशय जी ने परिवार के साथ सियालकोट छोड़ना ही उचित समझा.
महाशय जी के एक रिश्तेदार दिल्ली में रहते थे इसी वजह से महाशय जी भी दिल्ली के करोलबाग में आ कर रहने लगे. उस वक़्त उनके पास सिर्फ 1500 रूपये थे और कोई धंधा या रोजगार भी नहीं था. किसी तरह से महाशय जी ने रुपए जोड़ कर एक ‘तांगा’ खरीद लिया. सियालकोट का एक मसाला व्यापारी अब दिल्ली का एक तांगा चालक बन चुका था. दो महीने तक तांगा चलाने के बाद उन्होंने तांगा चलाना छोड़ दिया.
तांगा चलाना छोड़ने के बाद महाशय जी फिर से बेरोजगार हो गये और कोई काम उन्हें आता नहीं था, सिवाय मसाला बनाने के. काफी सोच-विचार के उन्होंने घर पर ही मसाले बनाने का काम शुरू करने का मन बनाया. बाज़ार से मसाला खरीद कर लाते, घर में पीसते और फिर इसे बेचते. चूँकि ईमानदार होने के कारण ये मसाले में कुछ गड़बड़ नहीं करते थे तो इनके मसालों की गुणवत्ता अच्छी होती थी. धीरे-धीरे उनके ग्राहक बढ़ने लगे. बहुत सारा मसाला घर में पीसना आसान बात नहीं थी. अब महाशय घर में मसाला पीसने की बजाय चक्की पर जाकर मसाला पिसवाने लगे. एक बार उन्होंने चक्की वाले को मसाले में कुछ मिलाते हुए देख लिया. ये देख उन्हें काफी दुख हुआ. और यही वो वक्त था जब महाशय जी ने मसाला पीसने की फैक्ट्री खोलनी चाही.
वर्ष 1959 में एमडीएच मसाला फैक्टरी की नींव रखी गई थी. इसे महाशियन दी हट्टी (एमडीएस) कहा जाता है और दिल्ली के कीर्ति नगर में इस कंपनी की स्थापना धर्मपाल गुलाटी ने की थी. 2017 में धर्मपाल गुलाटी सबसे ज्यादा बिकने वाले एफएमसीजी उत्पाद के सीईओ बने थे. वर्तमान में देशभर के अंदर ही एमडीएच की 15 फैक्ट्रियां हैं. दिल्ली-एनसीआर में आधा दर्जन से अधिक फैक्ट्रियां हैं. सबसे दिलचस्प बात यह है कि हर घर में पहचाने जाने वाले और कामयाबी के मुकाम पर पहुंचने वाले धर्मपाल केवल 5वीं पास हैं. धर्मपाल का पढाई-लिखाई में बिल्कुल भी मन नही लगता था, जबकि उनके पिता चुन्नीलाल चाहते थे कि वह खूब पढ़ें. हालांकि, पिता की चाहत पूरी नहीं हुई और 5वीं के बाद उन्होंने स्कूल छोड़ दिया था फिर पिता के साथ दुकान पर बैठने लगे थे.
