राग देश अथवा देश खमाज थाट का राग है. इसके ऊपर कई प्रमुख गीत हैं, जिनमें सबसे जाना माना है वन्दे मातरम. शायद इसी गीत की परंपरा को आगे बढ़ाते हुए 1989 में दूरदर्शन पर प्रसारित किया गया यह गाना, ‘बजे सरगम हर तरफ से, गूंजे बनकर देश राग’ बनाया गया. इसमें भारत के मशहूर गायक, वादक और नृत्यांगना, देश की मुख्य प्रदर्शन कला का नमूना पेश करते हैं. राग तो शास्त्रीय संगीत है ही, साथ-साथ तबला, संतूर, सरोद, सितार, कथक, भरतनाट्यम, मणिपुरी, ओड़िसी सब इस वीडियो में एक ही धुन में भारत की एकता को खूबसूरती से उभारकर प्रस्तुत करते है.
यह बहुत ही मधुर राग है और ध म ग रेय ग ,नि साय इन स्वरों से पहचाना जाता है. इस राग में षड्ज-मध्यम और षड्ज-पंचम भाव होने से यह बहुत ही कर्णप्रिय है.
राग देश की बन्दिशें आचार्य विश्वनाथ राव द्वारा रचित पुस्तक आचार्य तनरंग की बन्दिशें भाग 1 से ली गई हैं. इस पुस्तक में 31 रागों की कुल 389 बन्दिशें है. गाने बजाने का समय रात का दूसरा प्रहर माना जाता है.
यदि हम इसकी बारिकियों से हटकर आपसे कहें कि आपने सुना है, तो आप थोड़ी देर के लिए असमंजस की स्थिति में आ सकते हैं. लेकिन, ऐसी कोई आवश्यकता नहीं है. बता दें कि 1985 में दूरदर्शन पर अनेक कलाकारों को मिलाकर बना कार्यक्रम‘देश-राग’ बहुत लोकप्रिय हुआ था. सुरेश माथुर द्वारा लिखित गीत के बोल थे,‘‘मिले सुर मेरा तुम्हारा, तो सुर बने हमारा.’’ उगते सूर्य की लालिमा, सागर के अनंत विस्तार और झरनों के कलकल निनाद के बीच जो धीर-गंभीर स्वर और चेहरा दूरदर्शन पर प्रकट होता था, वह था पंडित भीमसेन जोशी का. इस गीत की मूल धुन भी उन्होंने ही बनाई थी. राग भैरवी में निबद्ध इस गीत ने शास्त्रीय संगीत एवं भीमसेन जी को पूरे भारत में लोकप्रिय कर दिया.
शास्त्रीय संगीत की परम्परा में राग देश एक महत्वपूर्ण राग है. देशभक्ति के गीतों की परंपरा में महेन्द्र कपूर का नाम भी उसी प्रकार महत्वपूर्ण है. देशप्रेम का हर गीत देश राग में नहीं होता, मगर जब भी हम महेन्द्र कपूर का जिक्र करते हैं तो हमारे जेहन में उनकी छवि बाकायदा देशराग के एक अहम् गायक के रूप में कौंधती है. यह वाकई सच है कि देशभक्ति और परम्परागत मूल्यों में जितने लोकप्रिय और अनूठे गाने महेन्द्र कपूर ने गाए हैं उतनी संख्या में उतने श्रेष्ठ गाने शायद किसी दूसरे गायक ने न गाए होंगे.
