जब भी युद्ध होता है, तो उसमें बाहुबल के साथ जुनून और हौसला काफी अहम होता है. 1965 के युद्ध का जिक्र आते ही अब्दुल हमीद की वीरता का जिक्र जरूर आता है. भारत के इस वीर सपूत ने अपनी वीरता के बल पर पाकिस्तान के नापाक मंसूबों को ध्वस्त कर दिया था. अपने जोश और दिमागी रणनीति से दुश्मन देश के सात जंगी टैंक को यदि कोई अपने दम पर नेस्तोनाबूत कर दे, तो क्या कहेंगे ? चैंक जाएंगे न! सच यही है कि अब्दुल हमीद ने 1965 की भारत-पाक युद्ध में यह अविश्वसनीय कारनामा कर दिया है. पाकिस्तान के खिलाफ जंग में असाधारण बहादुरी का परिचय देने वाले देश के रणवांकुरों में परमवीर चक्र अब्दुल हमीद का नाम पूरे सम्मान से लिया जाता है. दुबले से इस शख्स ने 8 सितंबर 1965 को पंजाब के असल उताड़ नाम के गांव में पाकिस्तान के उन फौलादी टैंकों को मोम की तरह पिघला दिया, जिन पर देश के दुश्मनों को बहुत नाज था. उस लड़ाई में पाकिस्तान की तरफ से परवेज मुशर्रफ भी लड़ रहे थे और उन्हें भी पाकिस्तानी फौज के साथ जान बचाकर भागना पड़ा था.
बता दें कि 1 जुलाई, 1933 को उत्तर प्रदेश के गाजीपुर जिले में एक साधारण से मुस्लिम परिवार में जन्मे हमीद को बचपन से ही साहसिक काम करने में आनंद आता था. कुश्ती के शौकीन हमीद को लाठी चलाने के अलावा तैराकी करने में भी मजा आता था. सेना के जवानों को देखकर युवा हमीद के मन में अजब सा रोमांच भर जाता था और देश की सेवा करने की इच्छा उनके मन में जागती थी. देशसेवा के अपने इस जज्बे को पूरा करने के लिए वे वर्ष 1954 में सेना में भर्ती हुए और ग्रेनेडियर्स इन्फैन्ट्री रेजीमेंट में सेवाएं देनी प्रारंभ की. काम के प्रति अपने समर्पण के कारण जल्द ही उन्होंने साथियों के बीच अलग पहचान बना ली.
सेना ने भी उनके समर्पण भाव की कद्र करते हुए उन्होंने लांस नायक के रूप में प्रमोट कर दिया. वर्ष 1962 के भारत-चीन वार में भी हमीद को सैनिक के रूप में देश की सेवा करने का अवसर मिला. हालांकि दुश्मन के छक्के छुड़ाने की उनकी इच्छा 1965 के वार के दौरान पूरी हुए. पाकिस्तान की फौज ने हमला बोल दिया. 10 सितंबर 1965 को दुश्मन की फौजें आगे बढ़ीं और अमृतसर तक जा पहुंची. पाकिस्तानी सैनिकों को देश की सरजमीं पर देखकर तो हमीद का खून खौल उठा. उन्होंने तय किया कि दुश्मन को आगे नहीं बढ़ने देंगे. इसके लिए उन्होंने पाकिस्तान के टैंकों से भी दो-दो हाथ करने की ठानी.
पाकिस्तान के पेटन टैंकों को आगे बढ़ते देखकर हमीद ने ऐसे काम को अंजाम दिया जिसकी दुश्मन की सेना ने सपने में भी कल्पना नहीं की थी. अपनी तोपयुक्त जीप को उन्होंने ऊंचे स्थान पर ले जाकर ताबड़तोड़ गोले बरसाए और तीन टैंकों को नष्ट कर डाला. गौरतलब है कि अमेरिका में निर्मित पेटन टैंकों को पाकिस्तान की सैन्य क्षमता के लिहाज से बेहद महत्वपूर्ण माना जाता था. हालांकि इस काम को अंजाम देने में उन्हें शहादत देनी पड़ी. पाकिस्तानी फौज की जवाबी फायरिंग में उन्हें जान गंवानी पड़ी लेकिन उनके इस साहस भरे काम ये दुश्मन की सेना के हौसले पस्त हो गए और बाद में उसे उल्टे पांव वापस लौटने को मजबूर होना पड़ा. 33 वर्ष की उम्र में उन्होंने देश के लिए जान कुर्बान कुरबान कर दी.
हमीद के इस जज्बे को सेल्यूट करते हुए सेना ने उन्हें अपने सबसे बड़े सम्मान परमवीर चक्र से नवाजा, यह सम्मान उनकी विधवा रसूलन बी ने प्राप्त किया. सैन्य डाक सेवा ने 10 सितंबर, 1979 को उनके सम्मान में एक विशेष आवरण जारी किया है. वर्ष 2000 में देश ने अपने इस बहादुर सपूत पर एक विशेष डाक टिकट जारी किया.
