कोई बतलाओ कि हम बतलाएँ क्या
मिर्ज़ा असदुल्ला बेग खां, जिन्हें आज पूरा विश्व मिर्ज़ा ग़ालिब के नाम से जानता है, भारतीय उपमहाद्धीप के एक महत्वपूर्ण कवि थे। ग़ालिब का पूरा नाम मोहम्मद असदउल्लाह खान था। ग़ालिब को उर्दू भाषा का सर्वकालिक महान शायर माना जाता है और फ़ारसी कविता के प्रवाह को हिन्दुस्तानी जबान में लोकप्रिय करवाने का श्रेय भी इन्हीं को दिया जाता है। आगरा, दिल्ली और कलकत्ता में अपनी ज़िन्दगी गुजारने वाले ग़ालिब को मुख्यतः उनकी उर्दू ग़ज़लों को लिए ही याद किया जाता है। उन्होने अपने बारे में लिखा है कि –

यानी, दुनिया में यूं तो बहुत से अच्छे शायर हैं, लेकिन ग़ालिब की शैली सबसे निराली है।
मिर्ज़ा ग़ालिब का जन्म 27 दिसम्बर 1797 को आगरा के काला महल में हुआ था। उनके पिता का नाम मिर्ज़ा अब्दुल्लाह बेग खान और माता का नाम इज्ज़त निसा बेगम था। गालिब के पूर्वज भारत में नहीं बल्कि तुर्की में रहा करते थे।
मिर्ज़ा ग़ालिब को मीर तकी ‘मीर’ और चचा ग़ालिब भी कहा जाता रहा है। मिर्ज़ा ग़ालिब के द्वारा लिखी गयी शायरियां हिंदी और फारसी भाषा में भी मौजूद है। उन्होने अधिकतर फारसी और उर्दू में पारम्परिक भक्ति और सौन्दर्य रस पर रचनाएं लिखी जो गजल में लिखी हुई है।
गालिब ने कभी भी औपचारिक शिक्षा प्राप्त नहीं की। वो कभी मदरसा नहीं गए थे। मुल्ला अब्दुल समद उनके शिक्षक थे। जिनसे उन्होंने अरबी फारसी और दर्शनशास्त्र की शिक्षा ली थी। उनकी अरबी फारसी और दूसरी भाषाओं पर इतनी पकड़ थी कि उन्हें पढ़ाने वाले भी उनके कायल हो गए थे। इन्होंने 11साल की उम्र से शायरी लिखनी शुरू कर दी थी।
इतिहासकारों का मानना है कि अग़र ग़ालिब ने शायरी न भी की होती तो उनके ख़त उन्हें अपने दौर का सबसे ख्यात इंसान बना देते। उन्हें ख़त लिखने का बेहद शौक़ था। उर्दू में पत्र लिखने की परंपरा की शुरुआत उन्होंने ही की। पत्र लेखन की कला का पुरोधा उन्हें ही कहा जा सकता है। उन्होंने अपने दोस्तों को खत लिखे और किस्सागोई भरे जिस अंदाज में लिखे, वह आज भी एक विरासत की तरह है। ग़ालिब के लिखे पत्र, जो उस समय प्रकाशित नहीं हुए थे, को उर्दू लेखन का महत्वपूर्ण दस्तावेज़ भी माना जाता है। यद्यपि इससे पहले के वर्षो में मीर तक़ी ‘मीर’ भी इसी वजह से जाने जाते थे। इसलिए ग़ालिब लिखते हैं –
रेख़्ते के तुम्हीं उस्ताद नहीं हो ‘ग़ालिब’
कहते हैं अगले ज़माने में कोई ‘मीर’ भी था
1850 में शहंशाह बहादुर शाह ज़फ़र द्वितीय ने मिर्ज़ा ग़ालिब को दबीर-उल-मुल्क और नज़्म-उद-दौला के ख़िताब से नवाज़ा था। मिर्ज़ा ग़ालिब एक समय में मुग़ल दरबार के शाही इतिहासकार भी थे।
15 फरवरी 1869 को मिर्ज़ा ग़ालिब की मृत्यु हो गई लेकिन हैरत की बात यह थी कि मिर्ज़ा ग़ालिब जैसे महान कवि की मृत्यु होने के दो दिन पश्चात् यह खबर पहली बार उर्दू अखबार अकमल-उल-अख़बार में छपी। रोचक बात यह है कि शादी को कैद बताने वाले इस शायर की पत्नी उमराव बेगम की मौत एक साल बाद हो गयी। दोनों की कब्र दिल्ली के निजामुद्दीन इलाके में बनायीं गयी।
इस बात में कोई शक नहीं कि दुनिया से विदा होने के 150 से ज्यादा साल बाद भी जो हमारे बीच हर वक्त उठते-बैठते हैं, जिनके शेर और शायरी पढ़े बिना शेरो-शायरी की महफिल अधूरी है, वो मिर्जा गालिब सिर्फ फलसफे नहीं कहते थे, उन्होंने जिंदगी की फिलॉसफी को बहुत आसान शब्दों में पूरी दुनिया को समझाया है।
