पत्रकारिता को लोकतंत्र का चौथा स्तंभ कहा जाता है. लोकतंत्र तभी मजबूत होगा, जब पत्रकारिता अपनी सार्थक भूमिका निभाए. सार्थक पत्रकारिता का उदेश्य है कि वह प्रशासन और समाज के बीच महत्वपूर्ण कड़ी बने. समय के साथ हिंदी पत्रकारिता समर्थ होती जा रही है. हिंदी पत्रकारिता का सफर लगभग 186 साल पुराना है. हिंदी भाषा का प्रथम समाचार पत्र उदन्त मार्तन्ड, जोकि 1826 में कोलकाता के कोल्हू टीला से प्रकाशित हुआ था और भारतेंदु व द्विवेदी युग का लंबे समय जुड़े रहे थे. देश में लगातार हिंदी के पाठकों, लेखकों व पत्रकारों की संख्या में वृद्धि हो रही है. वर्तमान में लगभग 22 हजार पत्र-पत्रिकाएं हिंदी में प्रकाशित होती हैं, जोकि एक रिकार्ड है.
पत्रकारिता के इतिहास पर नजर डालें तो स्वतंत्रता के पूर्व पत्रकारिता का मुख्य उदेश्य स्वतंत्रता प्राप्ति था. उस दौर में हिंदी पत्रकारिता ने पूरे देश को एकता के डोर में बांधने का काम किया. पूरे समाज को स्वाधीनता आंदोलन से जोड़े रखा. राष्ट्रीय आंदोलन में हिंदी की महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका रही है. हिंदी पत्रकारिता के क्षेत्र में ‘आज’ अखबार का महत्व्पूर्ण स्थान है. इसके संपादक बाबूराव पराड़कर जी का वही स्थान है, जो हिंदी साहित्य में द्विवेदी जी का है.
भारत में आधुनिक पत्रकारिता का जन्म 1780 के हिक्की गजट से मानते है. हिंदी का पहला पत्र उदंत मार्तंड 1926 में प्रकाशित हुआ. इसके संपादक पंडित जुगलकिशोर थे. यह साप्ताहिक पत्र था. आधुनिक रूप से हिंदी पत्रकारिता 1921 से शुरू हुई. इसी समय हिंदी का प्रवेश विश्वविद्यालय में हुआ था.
हिंदी पत्रकारिता 1990 की राष्ट्रीय पाठक सर्वे की रिपोर्ट बताती है की 5 बड़े समाचार पत्रों में चार केवल हिंदी में थे. यह उस समय की उत्साहजनक बात थी. पिछले 5 दशक मे हिंदी पत्रकारिता ने अपना विकास किया. हिंदी और भारतीय भाषाओं में पाठकों की संख्या बढ़ रही है. पिछले दो दशक से हिंदी पत्रकारिता ने काफी तेजी से शीर्ष की ओर कदम बढ़ाए है. अंग्रेजी चैनल्स भी अब हिंदी में वाद विवाद का कार्यक्रम दिखाते हैं, जो हिंदी की महत्ता को दर्शाता है. अब यह कहा जा सकता है कि हिंदी पत्रकारिता आने वाले समय में प्रगति की तरफ अग्रसर है.
वर्तमान की बात करें, तो इंटरनेट ने आज की पत्रकारिता को बहुआयामी बना दिया है. इसलिए मीडिया को सशक्त और स्वत्रंत, बहुयामी और प्रभावकारी बनना चाहिए. इंटरनेट के द्वारा हिंदी को बढ़ावा मिला है. सही अर्थो में अब हिंदी भाषा हिंदी पत्रकारिता का प्रचार प्रसार कर रही है.
इसके साथ ही रेडियो पत्रकारिता आज एक विशेषज्ञतापूर्ण विधा है. इसमें पत्रकार-संपादक को अपने कार्य में सशक्त भूमिका का निर्वहन करना पड़ता है. सीमित अवधि में समाचारों की प्रस्तुति एवं चयन रेडियो पत्रकार की दक्षता को साबित करते हैं. विविध समाचार एवं जानकारी प्रधान कार्यक्रमों के माध्यम से आकाशवाणी समग्र विकास की प्रक्रिया को बढ़ाने में अग्रसर है.
इसी प्रकार टेलीविजन पत्रकारिता का फलक आज बहुत विस्तृत हो गया है. उपग्रह चैनलों की बढ़ती भीड़ के बीच यह एक प्रतिस्पर्धा एवं कौशल का क्षेत्र बन गया है. आधुनिक संचार-क्रांति में निश्चय ही इसकी भूमिका को नकारा नहीं जा सकता. इसके माध्यम से हमारे जीवन में सूचनाओं का विस्फोट हो रहा है. ग्लोबल विलेज (वैश्विक ग्राम) की कल्पना को साकार रूप देने में यह माध्यम सबसे प्रभावी हुआ. दृश्य एवं श्रव्य होने के कारण इसकी स्वीकार्यता एवं विश्वसनीयता अन्य माध्यमों से ज्यादा है.
