आर. के. लक्ष्मण के कार्टून बोलते थे।
एक आम आदमी की सशक्त आवाज माने जाने वाले कार्टूनिस्ट आर. के. लक्ष्मण को भारत के प्रमुख व्यंग्य चित्रकार के रूप में ख्याति प्राप्त है। आर. के. लक्ष्मण का पूरा नाम ‘रासीपुरम कृष्णस्वामी लक्ष्मण’ था। उनका जन्म 24 अक्टूबर, 1921 को मैसूर, कर्नाटक में हुआ। आर. के. लक्ष्मण के पिता स्कूल में प्रधानाध्यापक के पद पर नियुक्त थे। पिता की छह संतानें थीं, जिनमें लक्ष्मण सबसे कम उम्र के थे। उनके बड़े भाई प्रसिद्ध साहित्यकार आर. के. नारायण का उन्हें पूरा सहयोग प्राप्त हुआ। आर. के. लक्ष्मण ने हाईस्कूल पास करने के बाद ही तय कर लिया था कि वह कार्टूनिस्ट के रूप में अपना कैरियर बनाएंगे। बी.ए. करने के बाद उन्होंने ‘मैसूर विश्वविद्यालय’ में पढ़ते हुए फ्रीलांस कलाकार के रूप में ‘स्वराज अख़बार’ के लिए कार्टून बनाने शुरू किए, जिससे उन्हें बहुत ख्याति मिली। साथ ही एनिमेटेड फ़िल्मों में भी लक्ष्मण ने मिथकीय पात्र ‘नारद’ का चित्रांकन किया।
एक कार्टूनिस्ट के तौर पर लक्ष्मण को पहली फुल टाइम जॉब मुम्बई में ‘फ्री प्रेस जर्नल’ में मिली लेकिन ये नौकरी संपादक से मतभेद के चलते उन्होंने छोड़ दी। फ्री प्रेस जर्नल की नौकरी छोड़ने के बाद लक्ष्मण ने ‘टाइम्स ऑफ़ इंडिया’ में 50 साल से भी अधिक समय तक काम किया। यहाँ काम करते हुए लक्ष्मण को सैकड़ों चिट्ठियां मिला करती थीं। ऑफिस में उनके लिए सैकड़ों फ़ोन आते थे। उनके पास लोग अपने दैनिक जीवन की समस्याएं लेकर आते थे। पानी, बिजली से लेकर घूसखोरी तक, स्ट्रीट लाइट खराब होने से लेकर पुलिया की दिक्कत तक। लोगों को लगता था कि लक्ष्मण के कार्टूनों का सरकार पर काफी प्रभाव पड़ता है और वाकई में ऐसा था भी!
‘एशियन पेंट्स के गट्टू’ और ‘मालगुड़ी डेज’ के चरित्रों का आकर्षक चित्रण भी आर. के. लक्ष्मण ने ही किया। ‘मालगुड़ी डेज’ उनके ही बड़े भाई ‘आर. के. नारायण’ के उपन्यास पर आधारित कार्यक्रम था। आर. के. नारायण की एक कहानी है ‘दोडू’ जिसमें एक चुलबुला लड़का दोडू केंद्र में होता है। कहते हैं ये चरित्र उन्होंने भाई लक्ष्मण से ही प्रभावित होकर लिखा था।
1944 से लेकर 1964 तक का नेहरु युग वाला भारत आर. के. लक्ष्मण के कार्टूनों में बहुत नज़र आया। उसके बाद जब इंदिरा गांधी ने देश में आपातकाल लगा दिया तो भी बिना डर के लक्ष्मण की कूची चली, प्रेस की आजादी पर उन्होंने कई कार्टून बनाए। जनता पार्टी के समय की उठा-पटक भी उनके कार्टून में देखी जा सकती है।
लक्ष्मण ने पंडित जवाहर लाल नेहरू का भी कार्टून बनाया था। इसे लेकर 1962 में भारत-चीन युद्ध के बाद एक दिन सुबह आर. के. लक्ष्मण को तत्कालीन प्रधानमंत्री पंडित जवाहर लाल नेहरू का फोन आया। पंडित जी ने उनसे कहा “मुझे आज सुबह आपके कार्टून को देखकर बहुत हंसी आई और मैं चाहता हूं कि आप मुझे अपना हस्ताक्षर किया बड़े आकार का चित्र दें जिसे मैं फ्रेम करा सकूं।”
लक्ष्मण के कार्टून फिल्मों में भी इस्तेमाल हुए। हिंदी फिल्म ‘मिस्टर एंड मिसेज ’55 और तमिल फिल्म ‘कामराज’ में लक्ष्मण के कार्टूनों का प्रयोग किया गया है। उनकी सबसे मशहूर कार्टून स्ट्रिप ‘यू सेड इट’ नाम से ‘द टाइम्स ऑफ इंडिया’ में छपा करती थी। इसमें प्रदर्शित पात्र ‘कॉमन मैन’ आर.के. लक्ष्मण का ऐतिहासिक कार्टून कैरेक्टर था, जिसके द्वारा वे समकालीन भारत, भारतीय राजनीति तथा बदल रहे भारतीय लोकतंत्र पर जमकर व्यंग्य किया करते थे। लक्ष्मण के इस कॉमन मैन का कार्टून शुरू-शुरू में बंगाली, तमिल, पंजाबी या फिर किसी और प्रांत का हुआ करता था। लेकिन बाद में आर. के. लक्ष्मण के इस टेढ़े चश्मे, मुड़ी-चुड़ी धोती वाले, चारखाने कोट पहने व सिर पर चंद बाल लिए आम आदमी को काफी लोकप्रियता मिली, काफी कम समय में यह देश के हरेक आम आदमी का चहेता चेहरा बन गया।
1985 में लक्ष्मण ऐसे पहले भारतीय कार्टूनिस्ट बन गए जिनके कार्टून की लंदन में एकल प्रदर्शनी लगाई गई। आर. के. लक्ष्मण के कॉमन मैन वाले किरदार का डाक टिकट 1988 में जारी किया गया। पुणे में उनके ‘कॉमन मैन’ की आठ फीट की एक प्रतिमा भी लगाई गई है।
‘द टनल ऑफ टाइम’ आर. के. लक्ष्मण की प्रसिद्ध आत्मकथा है। लक्ष्मण को वर्ष 1973 में पद्मभूषण, वर्ष 1984 में रमन मैग्सेसे और वर्ष 2003 में पद्म विभूषण से सम्मानित भी किया जा चुका है। लक्ष्मण ने ‘द स्टार आई नेवर मेट’ नामक कार्टून श्रंखला भी शुरु की थी। उन्हें ‘पाइड पाइपर ऑफ डेल्ही’ यानी ‘दिल्ली का चितकबरा मुरलीवाला’ भी कहा गया।
26 जनवरी 2015 को ‘कॉमन मैन’ का ‘अनकॉमन’ कार्टूनिस्ट इस दुनिया से चला गया। गंभीर से गंभीर बात को भी बेहद हल्के अंदाज़ में अपने कार्टूनों के माध्यम से कह देने वाले कार्टूनिस्ट आर. के. लक्ष्मण भले ही आज हमारे बीच नहीं है लेकिन आज भी उनके किरदार ‘कॉमन मैन’ के रूप में वह लोगों के बीच जिंदा है।
लक्ष्मण के कार्टून आज के परिदृश्य में भी बिल्कुल सटीक बैठते हैं। अपने कार्टूनों के द्वारा लक्ष्मण ने एक आम आदमी को व्यापक स्थान दिया तथा उसके जीवन की खुशी, उदासी व गम को शब्दों व रेखाओं के माध्यम से समाज के सामने रखा। वाकई में, आर. के. लक्ष्मण के कार्टून न केवल दिखते थे अपितु वे एक आम आदमी की सशक्त आवाज़ बन बोलते भी थे।
